City files nuisance abatement petition in response to fatal shooting

Following the fatal Oct. 23, 2022, shooting outside of the H-Bar, 220 S. Van Buren St., the City of Iowa City is pursuing additional measures to protect the community from the ongoing serious criminal activity occurring at and around the business since its opening earlier this year. On Friday, Oct. 28, the City filed paperwork in Johnson County District Court seeking a nuisance abatement order. The nuisance abatement filing requests the Court to require the H-Bar to be closed between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily.

The Iowa City Airport Commission is asking residents to complete a brief online survey . The purpose of the survey is to provide information to the Airport Commission as it discusses the airport's role in our community. The Commission will use this information as it develops a 5-year strategic plan to guide the future activities of the Airport Commission and airport staff.

The survey is available online through Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022. All responses to the survey are anonymous.

When your Halloween pumpkin begins to decay and the holiday is over, remember to toss your jack-o'-lantern in the compost, not in your trash!

The City of Iowa City’s organics (yard and food waste) program accepts pumpkins. Here's the proper way to compost your pumpkins or seasonal gourds through the City:

Remove any candles or lights from inside your pumpkin. Place it in your yellow-lid organics cart or in a paper yard waste bag (bag weight limit is 50 pounds). Set cart and/or paper yard waste bags at the curb for collection on your normal service day.

Iowa City man sentenced to federal prison in connection with 2021 shooting

The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Iowa announced this week that Sean White Hood, 32, of Iowa City, was sentenced to 72 months in prison for Felon in Possession of a Firearm for his role in a July 2021 shooting. Hood's sentencing took place Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, in Davenport.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, the Iowa City Public Library (ICPL) hosted a Drag Storytime and Costume Ball. Drag Storytime is a voluntary program that provides educational opportunities and fun, enriching experiences to families with children of all ages. The City of Iowa City Human Rights Commission believes this programming strongly aligns with ICPL’s values of access, belonging, collaboration, and community. Though many drag storytime events have been hosted by ICPL since 2018, the Oct. 15 storytime was the first to be attended by a group of protesters.

The Iowa City Senior Center (ICSC) will close at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, due to the University of Iowa Homecoming Parade.

Various streets in Downtown Iowa City will start to close at 4 p.m., and the Tower Place Parking Ramp, connected to the ICSC, will close at 5 p.m. The early closure of the ICSC ensures visitors will be able to leave the area ahead of the parade.

Iowa City Police respond to convenience store robberies

Iowa City Police have responded to two convenience store robberies recently.

At 8:27 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21, an armed subject entered BP, 2221 Rochester Ave., and robbed the business at gunpoint. At 8:36 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, Kirkwood Liquor & Tobacco, 300 Kirkwood Ave., was robbed at gunpoint.

Iowa City Police are actively investigating both robberies. Convenience store employees and community members are asked to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Anyone who sees something suspicious should call 911 or the routine police business number, 319-356-5275....
