People can access Upper City Park and the City Park Pool from Riverside Drive (from the south) and Park Road (from the west). Know that Upper City Park Drive is a one-way road and experiences a high volume of pedestrians and cyclists, many of whom are children. The Upper City Park exit is to the east, across the Park Road Bridge to Dubuque Street. A temporary rock road has been installed for people to use to exit the park.
People can access Lower City Park and the Riverside Festival Stage from Dubuque Street and the Park Road Bridge.
The two parks are also connected by stairs located between the historic cabins, east of the pool and the Riverside Festival Stage. People can use this as an alternative to the posted detour routes.
This portion of Park Road should reopen to traffic in mid-August. However, the Gateway Project timeline is fluid and subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen delays.
The Iowa City Gateway Project is a flood mitigation effort that will elevate Dubuque Street while also raising and replacing the Park Road Bridge.
A notice specifically concerning the Gateway Project and access to Upper and Lower City Park is available and updated on the City of Iowa City homepage at icgov.org.
