First Avenue and Scott Boulevard construction update; roundabout scheduled to open in September

The construction of the First Avenue and Scott Boulevard roundabout will continue through early September due to various delays associated with the project.

The City has been working with the contractor throughout these delays in order to reach completion as quickly as possible.

Upcoming intersection closure

Those traveling through the area can expect a complete closure of the First Avenue and Scott Boulevard intersection near the end of August prior to the opening of the roundabout. This closure will last a minimum of three days up to a maximum of seven days. Advance...

It’s back! Our annual Kids Market returns from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022.

Kids ages 8 to 18 are invited to participate as a Kid Vendor during our 11th annual Kids Market. The event will take place outside of Chauncey Swan Park and Parking Garage, along East Washington Street, between Gilbert and Van Buren streets.

Participants will be allowed to sell items that they have crafted, grown, baked, or produced. Each vendor will be responsible for bringing supplies that they will need to set up a booth, which may include tables and chairs.

Iowa City Police arrest armed subject Sunday morning

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, July 31, 2022, Iowa City Police were called to El Ray's Live and Dive, 211 E. Iowa Ave., for an armed subject who threatened bar staff with a gun after being kicked out of the establishment.

Officers located the subject - later identified as 18-year-old Alex Bwayonga - and took him into custody. A stolen firearm was located on the subject. During the course of his arrest, Bwayonga appeared to exhibit signs of a medical emergency. Bwayonga was given care at the scene and evaluated at an area hospital before his arrest.

The City of Iowa City is now accepting applications from organizations for the use of federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund (SLFRF) funds to address the needs of non-profits who have experienced negative economic impacts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
