AARP Tax Aide Program Not Expected to Resume at The Center this Summer

Based on current public health guidance and due to the uncertain timing of the Iowa City Senior Center's phased reopening, the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program will not be able to resume services at The Center prior to the July 15 federal tax filing deadline. We encourage those who still need to file a tax return this year to make alternative arrangements.

Here are some tips and suggestions related to tax filing:
  • If you expect to get a tax refund (not owe the IRS), you have up to three years to file your return with no penalty.
  • Free tax preparation and e-filing services are available online for those with an adjusted gross income up to $69,000. See further details below.
  • Consider asking a trusted friend or family member to help prepare your return, if needed.
  • The Tippie College/Johnson County Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) may be able to help you remotely. Email vita@uiowa.edu to inquire or leave a message on VITA voicemail: 319-335-0857.
Prepare Your Taxes Online

Because of the current suspension of in-person tax assistance, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is providing free access to selected tax preparation software so taxpayers can prepare and file their own tax returns at no cost. These services are provided through the Free File Alliance, a nonprofit coalition that partners with the IRS to offer several tax software options.

Review the information below to see if you are eligible to use one of these software options. Each link will take you to a designated webpage where you will be asked to supply information to begin a secure account with the particular service provider.
