Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague has proclaimed Monday, Oct. 10, 2022, as Indigenous Peoples' Day in Iowa City. The proclamation was signed at the Monday, Oct. 3, 2022, City Council meeting.
A growing number of local governments have recognized that, as our understanding of history changes, so must our commemorative events. The proclamation encourages educational institutions, businesses, and other organizations to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day and join the City in committing to oppose and overcome systemic racism and injustices.
