City delays required radon testing for rental units to July 1, 2021 due to COVID-19

The City's plan to verify radon testing at all single family detached and duplex rental units has been moved back to July 1, 2021 due to COVID-19.

In January, the City of Iowa City announced a new policy requiring all single family detached and duplex rental properties to be tested for hazardous radon levels as a step towards improved public health. The ordinance, set to go into effect on July 1, 2020, has been extended and will begin July 1, 2021.

As part of Iowa City’s Climate Action initiatives, the Parks and Recreation Department recently announced plans to establish natural prairie areas on City property and in some existing parks.

Following feedback received from residents, the City has updated the prairie establishment maps. City Hall and other City of Iowa City offices will be closed Monday, May 25, 2020, for Memorial Day.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, City facilities have been closed to the public since early March, but critical City operations have continued with full staff. On Memorial Day, many City staff will have the day off, altering some operations.

Holiday closures or schedule adjustments are as follows:

The Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center will open to residential customers on Monday, May 18, 2020. All services, including yard waste, bulky items, electronics and appliances recycling, and compost will be available. Wood chip mulch will not be available until further notice.

The Landfill is located at 3900 Hebl Avenue SW in Iowa City. Hours will be 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday the week of May 18. The Governor has ordered that malls, retail stores, fitness centers, and more businesses may reopen in Iowa City and Johnson County on Friday, May 8, 2020.

City facilities remain closed until further notice. Residents should continue to practice social distancing at all times, and only essential trips should be made outside of the home.

In businesses or places where social distancing may not be possible, people should continue to wear cloth masks.

City Council adopts Accelerating Climate Actions Report

The Iowa City Council unanimously adopted the City's Accelerating Climate Actions Report at their Tuesday, April 21, 2020 formal meeting.

The 41-page report outlines how the City can accelerate its Climate Action goals, including decreasing CO₂ emissions throughout Iowa City from 2018 levels of 1,020,073 Metric Tonnes to 756,091 by 2030. The final goal is for Iowa City to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
