Effective Thursday, January 12, 2017 Iowa City Transit buses will not service bus stop 8123, located at the intersection of Benton Street and Oaknoll Drive, due to utility work being done at that location. Customers who normally use this stop should use stop number 8122 located adjacent to the Seville Apartment complex on Benton Street as an alternate. Normal service is expected to resume effective Saturday, January 14, 2017. Mayor Jim Throgmorton will conduct a Winter's Walk on Thursday, January 12. This walk will focus on small businesses located along 1st Ave. between Iowa City Marketplace (formerly Sycamore Mall) and Mall Drive. Join the national movement to make math the cool thing to do after school by attending Iowa City Public Library’s Crazy 8s Math Club.

Beginning January 10, this fun and educational program for elementary students in kindergarten through second grade meets from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Storytime Room every Tuesday.

Crazy 8s from the Bedtime Math Foundation is designed to get kids fired up about math. Participants will build things, run and jump, make music – even make a mess – while making new friends and increasing their understanding of math.

A new year comes with some new rules. Beginning January 3rd, people will no longer be able to throw away computer monitors or televisions at the Iowa City Landfill. The City has offered recycling of those electronics since 2003, but hadn’t enacted a ban at the landfill until now. The electronics contain many hazardous and toxic chemicals, which is why the ban was put in place. The move is expected to keep 340 to 360 tons of electronic waste out of the landfill...
