The holiday season is quickly approaching. As you prepare to share a meal with friends and loved ones, the Iowa City Fire Department would like to remind the community that cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.

During the Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2022, formal City Council meeting, Councilmember Janice Weiner proclaimed Sunday, Nov. 20 as Transgender Day of Remembrance in Iowa City. The City of Iowa City has earned a score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign's 11th annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI). The MEI is a nationwide evaluation of 506 cities in every state in the nation on how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people who live and work there.

Transit schedule announced for week of Thanksgiving

The Thanksgiving holiday will bring some changes to Iowa City Transit service.

Starting Monday, Nov. 21, 2022, the #4 - Downtown Shuttle route will be suspended until Monday, Nov. 28, 2022, due to the Thanksgiving holiday break for University of Iowa students.

There will be no Transit service on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 24, 2022. Due to a home Hawkeyes football game, the Saturday football transit schedule will be in place on Friday, Nov. 25, 2022. There will be normal service on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022.

Last week, the Iowa Department of Transportation released its 2022 Iowa Aviation Economic Report.

The report showcases aviation's impact on Iowa's economy, and how local airports impact local economies.

The report detailed that the Iowa City Municipal Airport brings $24 million annually in total economic activity to the area. The last time Iowa DOT conducted this study in 2009, it showed the airport brought in $11.2 million. That is a 114 percent increase in economic impact.

City of Iowa City administrative offices and other facilities will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24, and Friday, Nov. 25, 2022, in observance of the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Please note that trash, yard waste, and recycling will NOT be collected on Thanksgiving Day, but will be collected on Friday. Detailed schedule changes and other office closures are below.
