Iowa City Parks and Recreation and Backyard Abundance will host the sixth annual Plant Sale fundraiser on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street in Iowa City. Knowledgeable gardeners will be available to help people choose from a wide variety of locally-grown vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit trees and berry shrubs.  Proceeds fund educational yard tours and environmental classes in Johnson County.

All plants are carefully selected to maximize yield, resist diseases and thrive in the Iowa climate. Patrons can buy tomatoes, peppers, kale, cabbage, broccoli and many other vegetables and herbs. Berry bushes will also be for sale: blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, aronia berry, jostaberry and gooseberry. Local vendors will sell mushroom kits, willow basketry and herbal remedies.

Other features of the event include:

  • As part of the “Pick Me!” project, free tomato seedlings will be provided to anyone willing to establish the plants in a location where the produce can be freely picked by passersby.
  • The design of the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center Outdoor Edible Classroom will be unveiled. This edible landscape is located on the south side of the recreation center and will be open for touring during the event.
  • A seed swap table will allow patrons to share extra seeds or pick up free seeds.
  • Snacks made from locally grown, organic ingredients will be available for sale.
