Rental property rehab loans, grants now available for Iowa City residents

A new housing rehabilitation program is now available for rental property owners in Iowa City who are eligible for funding to rehabilitate smaller rental properties.

The Rental Rehabilitation Program allows for owners of single family and duplex rental properties in the City's targeted neighborhoods to receive up to $24,999 per unit for rehab work through a zero-interest loan and a grant provided by the City.

Applicants sought for open seats on Human Rights Commission

The Iowa City Human Rights Commission is seeking applicants to fill three vacancies on the Commission that will run from January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2022. Service is on a volunteer basis and the group meets monthly.

Duties of the Commission involve educating the public on civil and human rights, including planning programs and activities to eliminate unlawful discrimination. The Commission also makes recommendations to the City Council for Social Justice and Racial Equity Grant funding, as well as for additional local legislation as it relates to discrimination.

Community invited to meeting on applying for Social Justice & Racial Equity Grant

Those interested in applying for the City’s Social Justice and Racial Equity Grant for FY 2020 can attend one of two informational meetings being offered on Monday, November 18, 2019.

Meeting times are noon to 1:15 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., both in Emma Harvat Hall at City Hall, 410 E. Washington St.

The meetings will provide an opportunity to learn about the purpose, process, and timeline for the grant. Participants will also receive useful tips on filling out the application. A question and answer session will follow.

Arrest made in JoEllen Browning homicide case

On April 5, 2019, at approximately 6:59 am, a 911 call was made by Roy Carl Browning Jr., reporting his wife; JoEllen Browning (age 65) was unresponsive. At approximately 7:07 am, emergency personnel arrived and found JoEllen Browning deceased. She was found lying on the bedroom floor with apparent stab wounds.

The autopsy conducted by the University of Iowa Decedent Care Unit concluded JoEllen sustained multiple sharp force injuries to the front and back of her torso. The cause of death was sharp force injuries and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Trails partially closed at Terry Trueblood and Waterworks parks for forestry mulching

Trails at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area and Waterworks Prairie Park will be partially closed for natural areas maintenance.

Parts of the trail at Terry Trueblood, 579 McCollister Boulevard, will be periodically closed from Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019, until Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019, to allow for safe operation of a large forestry mower for forestry mulching.

The goal of this work is to control woody invasive species that have grown in many areas of the park.

Run for the Schools on Sunday will impact some area roads

Run for the Schools, a run benefiting students from the Iowa City Community School District and Regina Catholic Education Center, will happen this Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019.

Several roads will close for the half-mile, mile, 5K, 10K, and half-marathon run. Road closures will begin at 4 a.m. and are anticipated to reopen around noon.

Phil Tyne, an instructor with the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department, is offering crochet classes for youth (ages 10 and up) and adults. Three workshops are planned. All tools and materials are included in the fee.

South Gilbert Street sidewalk closed from Napoleon to McCollister

Beginning on the evening of Thursday, October 17, 2019, the sidewalk on the west side of South Gilbert Street will be closed to pedestrian and bike traffic between Napoleon Lane and McCollister Boulevard due to pavement replacement.

It is anticipated that this sidewalk will reopen on Monday, Oct. 20, 2019.

Trail users are to take note of this closure and seek an alternate route on the Iowa River Trail during this time. Please use caution when traveling through all construction areas.
