Iowa City Transit offers free shuttle service to MLK Day of Service event

A free shuttle to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Celebration event at Mercer Park and Aquatic Center will be offered on Monday, Jan. 16, 2023.

The shuttle will service the following areas: the Pheasant Ridge Neighborhood Center, the Iowa City Transit interchange immediately followed by the Iowa City Public Library, the Broadway Neighborhood Center, and the bus stop near the intersection of Lakeside Drive and Nevada Avenue.

Celebrate MLK Human Rights Week with free screening of "Selma" at FilmScene

FilmScene and GreenState Credit Union will present a free screening of "Selma" in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Week. The screening will take place at 6:30 p.m., Jan. 17, 2023, at FilmScene, 404 E College St. #100.

Ava DuVernay's powerful film chronicles the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement.

Salt/Sand mix available for residents during winter

The City provides a limited amount of salt and sand mix available at no charge to all Iowa City residents. The pile is located at the Streets Division parking lot, located off of South Gilbert Street in the parking lot at 3901 Napoleon Lane.

Iowa City residents should provide their own five-gallon bucket and shovel to obtain the mix, which is intended for local residential sidewalks, and not for commercial or contractor use. Materials will be replenished throughout the winter.

The Iowa City Area Chinese Association (ICACA) will host the 2023 Lunar New Year Gala from 4-5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023. The event will take place at The Englert Theatre, 221 W. Washington St.

Activities will include music and dance performances ranging from traditional Chinese drum performances to modern K-pop dance featuring the ICACA, University of Iowa Chinese program, and University of Iowa School of Music. The event will also feature speeches on the Lunar New Year.

The Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee and the South District Neighborhood Association are issuing a call for emerging artists to design, fabricate, and install a new bus stop bench along Highway 6 East, just east of Heinz Road.

The emerging artist will lead the project with assistance from a Project Mentor, and will also include neighborhood feedback into the bench design. The project will be designed, built, and installed by Fall 2023.

The City of Iowa City is pleased to announce the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has classified the City a Class 6 in the agency's Community Rating System (CRS) for floodplain management.

The CRS is a voluntary federal incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management practices that exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). With the first snowfall of 2023 ending around noon on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, residents should be prepared to clear sidewalks of snow and ice.

Sidewalks in Iowa City must be cleared within 24 hours of a one-inch or greater snowfall, or after any accumulation of ice has ended, for sidewalks to be used safely by pedestrians. Property owners who do not remove snow and ice in this timeframe may be subject to fines.
