Iowa City is working on becoming an official Blue Zones community, a main component of Iowa Governor Terry Branstad's Healthiest State Initiative. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics have been named one of America's Best Hospitals by U.S. News and World Report. Iowa City is also home to Mercy Hospital, a pre-eminent provider of health care to the region.

Home to the University of Iowa, Iowa City offers a number of higher education and continuing education opportunities. The Iowa City Community School District is the fifth-largest school district in Iowa, enrolling nearly 13,000 students preschool through 12th grade. The City offers lifelong learning opportunities through a number of our departments and divisions.
