Friends of Iowa City Senior Center was established in 2003 to provide philanthropic support to the Senior Center. As an IRC Section 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization — and with your generous support — Friends helps fill the growing gap between the ICSC's annual budget and funding provided by the City of Iowa City and Johnson County Block Grant. Through fundraising and community-based initiatives, Friends supports the Iowa City Senior Center in its work to enrich the community and improve the quality of life for adults age 50 and greater. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Simple & Free Pantry Exchange

Food insecurity is a serious problem for many older adults.

You can make a positive impact right here in your own community! The Iowa City Senior Center is home to a pantry exchange where people of all ages can freely give and take non-perishable food and personal hygiene items based on need. The pantry is located on the ground level of the Senior Center near the main entrance at Washington Street.

We gladly welcome donations to stock the pantry, including:

•  Peanut butter, jelly, honey
• Canned tuna, canned meats
• Canned and dry beans
• Canned soups & vegetables
• Canned fruits, fruit juice
• Nuts, dried fruits
• Pasta, rice, grains
• Cereal, granola bars
• Toothpaste/toothbrushes
• Deodorant
• Soap
• Shampoo
• Razors
• Toilet paper
• Adult incontinence products
• Laundry detergent

*We do not accept homemade food, food items that have been opened or have damaged packaging, or food items more than 6 months beyond the labeled “use by” date.

• Hourly public parking is available in the Tower Place parking ramp directly north of the Senior Center, Dubuque St. ramp next to the Public Library, and Chauncey Swan ramp across from City Hall.
  • A pedestrian bridge at level 3A of the Tower Place parking ramp leads into the 3rd floor of the Senior Center. 
  • For details on discounted member parking permits, inquire at the Senior Center reception desk.

• There are four handicapped parking meters located on Linn Street in front of the Senior Center. 

• There are also a variety of metered parking spaces and parking ramps throughout downtown. Visit icgov.org/parkingmeters for details on all public parking options.

• Iowa City Transit provides free bus fares for persons age 65+ and those who have a disabled bus pass card, Medicare card, and/or SEATS card. Visit icgov.org/transit for details about bus routes and schedules.

• Johnson County SEATS provides rides to senior citizens, people with disabilities, and others who may otherwise find it difficult to conduct daily transactions. Visit johnsoncountyiowa.gov/department-of-seats or call 319-339-6128 for more information.

• Johnson County employs a Mobility Coordinator who works to increase awareness of public transit and expand potential ridership, and strives to improve overall mobility for elderly, low-income persons, and persons with disabilities. •  To support the City's Climate Action Plan, we encourage members to consider alternatives to single user car rides when visiting the Senior Center, such as:
  • Utilizing the Iowa City Transit (bus) system
  • Carpooling with trusted friends
  • Biking
  • Walking

You can register for most programs online at the ICSC Registration Website or call the Senior Center at 319-356-5220.

Some programs require you to register with the instructor or partner organization. In these cases, details are provided in the program description.

Membership requirements: Current Senior Center membership is required for some classes. If needed, this will be noted in the program description.

Fees: Programs are offered without charge unless otherwise noted in the program guide. For in-person programs that have fees, please pay instructors on the first day of class. For virtual programs with fees, payment instructions are provided at the time of registration or soon after. 

For multi-session programs with registration, please sign up prior to the first meeting date and plan to attend all (or most) sessions.
