About the program
Project Cleanup is a program developed to support volunteer-led community cleanup efforts in Iowa City to help keep Iowa City clean and beautiful.
Kits include an instruction sheet, one pair of reusable gloves, and one 16-gallon orange plastic garbage bag.
Those interested in the program can stop by the Iowa City Public Library, Iowa City Senior Center, or City Hall’s Information Desk to pick up their cleanup kits.
Volunteers can collect litter around their block, throughout their neighborhoods, along a favorite walking route, and more. Make sure to request permission before entering private property to remove trash.
Student groups interested in doing cleanups on the University of Iowa campus are encouraged to contact the University’s Office of Sustainability for free supplies and instructions for proper disposal.
After the cleanup
You can dispose of the litter by placing your filled orange bags next to your waste receptacle on your regular curbside collection day. A $2.50 sticker is not required for Project Cleanup bags used for volunteer litter pickups.
Tracking progress
Volunteer cleanup leaders are asked to help us track the success of the program by visiting icgov.org/projectcleanup and filling out the short survey form to let us know who you are, where you volunteered, and how many bags of litter were collected.
The program is a partnership between the City’s Climate Action, Neighborhood Outreach, AmeriCorps, Resource Management, Storm Water, and Iowa City Public Library offices.
