Curbside Collection
This page offers information on the City of Iowa City residential curbside collection program for recycling, composting, and garbage. The program is available to Iowa City residents living in single-family homes up to 4-unit residential buildings.
Monthly fees per curbside service:
- Garbage: $14
- Recycling: $8.50
- Composting/Organics: $3.50
To find out which day your address receives collection, view the map. Operations are normally Monday through Friday, but may be impacted on official City holidays or in events of severe weather.
Residents new to Iowa City must sign up for utilities, which include water and curbside collection. Billing is monthly.
Want updates? Sign up to receive curbside notices at icgov.org/subscribe.
To ensure your curbside materials are collected safely and successfully throughout the winter season, follow these tips:
- Place carts or containers on a solid surface for pickup, such as the end of your driveway or the edge of the right-of-way. Do not place carts on a snowbank or in the street - this is a safety issue for you, for our staff, and for other vehicles.
- Have carts at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular collection day for pickup.
- Do not overfill carts. City ordinance states the lids must be closed. This helps control litter in your neighborhood.
- Keep at least a 3-feet clear zone around each cart to all the truck's mechanical arm to safely lift curbside carts.
- Keep recycling materials loose—no plastic bags! Also, no glass or Styrofoam.
- All garbage must be bagged. This also helps control litter in your neighborhood.
The City reminds residents that curbside composting collection for yard waste and food waste will continue throughout the winter season with no suspension in service though there may be a short delay after a holiday.
For questions about curbside collection, contact Mike Edwards at medwards@iowa-city.org or 319-356-5466.
For questions about composting and recycling, contact Jane Wilch at jwilch@iowa-city.org or 319-887-6110.
Curbside recycling is available to Iowa City residents living in single-family homes up to 4-unit residential buildings ($8.50/month on utility bill). Multi-family residences that are 5-unit and larger are not served by curbside collection, but recycling services are required to be provided.
Curbside recycling is single stream in Iowa City, meaning residents do not need to sort materials. All accepted materials can be placed in the same cart. The City provides 65-gallon blue-top recycling carts to curbside customers.

Yellow-top Composting Carts
Curbside customers can receive 25-gallon or 95-gallon carts for curbside composting collection by completing the Cart Request Form. Yard waste and food waste can be added to the same cart for pickup. The first cart is included in the monthly service fee.
Residents are allowed additional carts at a cost of $3.50 per month per cart to cover the cost of the cart and service. Carts will be delivered based on availability and wait times vary. Contact Resource Management at 319-356-5151 for more information.
If a customer determines that an additional cart they had ordered is no longer needed, a pickup can be scheduled for January of the following year. The monthly cart fee will continue to be charged until that time.
Some customers may have received a second cart during the City’s initial delivery efforts. Effective July 1, 2021, these customers will be charged an additional $3.50 per month for the second cart. If the additional carts are no longer needed, please contact customer service at 319-356-5151 to schedule a pickup. This pickup will be scheduled as soon as possible.
Yard Waste Stickers
A $2 yard waste sticker is required for each paper bag or bundle of yard waste placed at the curb for collection using Iowa City curbside collection services.
Stickers are available at the City Hall Revenue Office and participating retailers, including both Iowa City Ace Hardware locations and the Hy-Vee stores in Iowa City and Coralville.
Residents are encouraged to use the City-issued yellow-top composting cart to minimize the need for stickers and reduce the physical strain of lifting bags and bundles, improving safety and efficiency for collection crews.
Each household is eligible for one cart, included in the monthly $3.50 composting service fee. Additional carts are available for an extra monthly charge.
Wintertime Composting Tips
Curbside composting collection continues throughout the winter season.
Tips to reduce organic material from freezing to your curbside cart:
- Line your cart with cardboard or newspaper before placing wet yard waste or food waste in cart.
- Place food waste in freezer to preserve material. You can place frozen food waste in cart for your curbside collection day, or keep it frozen until temperatures warm up.
- Place food waste in paper bags or ASTM D6400-certified compostable bags before placing in cart.
- Wait to put your cart at the curb until 7 a.m. on your curbside collection day (if cart is regularly stored indoors).
If you keep your cart outdoors and regularly add food waste (or yard waste such as wet leaves) to it, the material may freeze to the cart. This can cause the materials to stick to the cart during curbside pickup. Material will thaw and loosen when temperatures warm up again.
Curbside garbage collection is available to Iowa City residents living in single-family homes up to 4-unit residential buildings ($14/month on utility bill). The City provides 65-gallon green-top garbage carts to curbside customers.
Additional garbage bags require a City of Iowa City garbage sticker per bag (view "Stickers for Additional Garbage Bags" tab below). Bulky items, like electronics and appliances, must be scheduled for pickup (view "Bulky Item Curbside Collection" tab below). Any items left at the curb without scheduling will be subject to additional fees with 24 hours notice.
A few areas in Iowa City are serviced by a smaller truck and will not be issued a City cart due to the garbage having to be manually-lifted. For those areas, residents may use up to two 35-gallon garbage containers for weekly pickup.
What materials can you place in the garbage?
While the City of Iowa City encourages residents to reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost as much as possible, some materials cannot be used again. Garbage collected via this program is transported to the Iowa City Landfill to be properly landfilled by certified, trained operators.

New fees announced for curbside yard waste collection and organic material disposal
Beginning Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the City of Iowa City will implement two new disposal fees following formal approval by the City Council on May 20. The changes are aimed at ensuring stable and sustainable funding for waste management services while moving to an equitable "pay-as-you-throw" system.
Curbside collection of yard waste bags and bundles
Starting July 1, a $2 yard waste sticker will be required for each paper bag or bundle of yard waste placed at the curb for collection using Iowa City curbside collection services.
To request a cart, visit www.icgov.org/curbside or call 319-356-5185.
Organic material drop-off at Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center's Compost Facility
Starting July 1, a new $5 minimum fee will be applied to all residential and commercial loads of organic material, including food scraps and yard waste, brought to the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center's Compost Facility.
The minimum fee covers loads weighing up to 400 pounds. Loads exceeding that amount will continue to be charged at the standard organic material rate of $24 per ton, consistent with the existing commercial pricing structure.
City officials encourage residents to compost at home whenever possible, helping to reduce the volume of material transported to the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center's Compost Facility for processing.
Additional items to note:
- Yard waste was banned in Iowa landfills by the State Legislature in 1991 and should not be placed in with your trash.
- You may not burn yard waste in Iowa City. Please check with your community for information about burning yard waste.
- Backyard composting is encouraged in Johnson County and may reduce your need for curbside collection or hauling yard waste to the Iowa City Landfill for processing.
- Many communities in Johnson County have curbside organic material collection options for residents. Please contact your community for more information about these services.
- A “pay-as-you-throw” system means that households that produce more material pay more for their disposal.
