The Resource Management Division provides garbage, recycling, and composting programs via services offered at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, drop-off recycling locations, and a residential curbside collection program.

Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center

The Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center is where the landfill, several recycling programs, the Compost Facility, and the Hazardous Material Collection Facility are located. 

These services are available to residents and businesses in Johnson County, and within the city limits of Kalona and Riverside. Materials from outside of this service area are not accepted.

Drop-off Recycling Locations 

Drop-off recycling options are available for a variety of materials from cardboard to batteries. 

These services are available to residents and businesses in Johnson County, and within the city limits of Kalona and Riverside. Materials from outside of this service area are not accepted.

Curbside Collection

Curbside collection of garbage, recycling, and composting are available to Iowa City residents living in single-family homes up to 4-unit residential buildings.

Monthly fees per curbside service:

  • Garbage: $14
  • Recycling: $8.50
  • Composting/Organics: $3.50

Operations are normally Monday through Friday, but may be impacted on official City holidays or in events of severe weather. For more information, view the "Holiday Schedule" tab below.

Weekly Curbside pickup schedule

Residents new to Iowa City must sign up for utilities, which include water and curbside collection. Billing is monthly.
