The Engineering Division performs work in connection with all municipal public works improvements, including bridges, roads, sanitary sewers, and stormwater systems. Engineering staff are involved in:
- Reviewing subdivision plans
- Providing design for improvement projects
- Performing survey work
- Inspecting construction of projects and subdivision improvements.
Complete Streets Policy
The City plans to realize long-term cost savings in improved public health, reduced fuel consumption, improved environmental stewardship, and reduced demand for motor vehicle infrastructure through the implementation of the Complete Streets Policy. Complete Streets contribute to walkable neighborhoods, make the community attractive to new business and employment, create a sense of community pride, and improve quality-of-life.
Statewide Urban Design and Specifications (SUDAS)
The City adopted the SUDAS Design Manual as amended by the SUDAS General Supplemental Design Standards and the City of Iowa City Design Supplement, current editions, as the City’s design standards. The City has adopted the SUDAS Standard Specifications as amended by the SUDAS General Supplemental Specifications and the City of Iowa City Supplemental Specifications, current editions, as the City’s standard specifications. These documents are the basis for design and construction on public improvement projects, work within the right-of-way in Iowa City, and any extraterritorial areas required to be constructed to City standards pursuant to any fringe area agreement.
