Project Overview

Safe Street and Roads for All (SS4A) is a competitive grant program through the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC) was awarded funds to create a Safe Streets and Roads for All – Safety Action Plan (Plan) to provide recommendations and projects that work to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries. The MPOJC is working in partnership with the Cities of Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, Tiffin, and University Heights for this Plan. The remaining areas of Johnson County are part of a separate Safety Action Plan.

The Plan will function as a guide for MPOJC’s partnering cities for future projects and strategies in their communities. The Plan will be developed using public input and data analysis with evaluation of the number and location of crashes, types and contributing factors of crashes, volume and mode of transportation trips, demographics of people involved in crashes, and will identify high-injury and high-risk transportation networks.

Why is MPOJC Doing this Plan?

Nationwide, traffic deaths increased through 2021. Since then, as more local and federal investment focused on traffic safety, these rates have slowly decreased. In Iowa, a clear downward trajectory has not occurred. There have been 7,694 total crashes in the MPOJC urbanized areas from 2020-2024. By creating this Plan, we are taking local action to identify critical areas of safety concern as well as potential solutions to increase safety and reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

Types of crashes in the MPOJC Urbanized Areas (2020-2024)

Preliminary data subject to change; Not including crashes on I-80, I-380, and US-218

Why Should I Get Involved?

To be successful, this Plan will need a combination of champions, experts, community members and leaders to advocate for regional safety efforts. Gaining information from residents, business owners, and those who travel within the communities of Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, Tiffin, and University Heights will ensure the final Plan recommends projects that will bring transportation safety solutions that benefit the community.
