Climate Action & Outreach
Welcome! Join Iowa City's efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2050!
Transform Buildings
- The most recent greenhouse gas inventory for Iowa City shows that 78% of our emissions come from the natural gas and electricity used to power and heat our homes and businesses. Preventing the worst impacts of climate change begins with reducing how much energy we consume in our buildings and using cleaner power sources like wind and solar to generate that energy. In these pages, find resources for builders and property managers, check out Iowa City’s insulation grant program, and view information on heat pumps and solar arrays.
Rethink Transportation
- The more we can embrace active transportation like biking or walking and modes that make more efficient use of our resources like transit and electric vehicles, the more we can put ourselves on a path toward better health in the present and reduced climate change impacts in the future. For the next stage in transportation, walk and roll starting today or view information on EVs in Iowa City.
Get Involved
- Individual choices can help build a groundswell of community support around more climate-related actions. By linking our actions with those of others, we help to create a more climate-aware community. In these pages, learn about the Climate Ambassador program, Climate Action Commission, events, grants, Green Iowa AmeriCorps, and hope offered at Project 51.
Build Resilience
- Preparedness is just one of many good reasons to plant more trees, weatherize homes, and get to know neighbors. These actions also help build a more livable, thriving community, both now and into the future. Foster climate adaptation through Iowa City’s tree voucher program, Root for Trees, in addition to viewing resources to Keep Cool Iowa City.
View Plans and Reports
- Iowa City maintains the longest running greenhouse gas inventory of any city in Iowa, and it has an important story to tell. Recorded emissions for 2024 were the lowest to date, surpassing the reductions seen in 2020. To see the efforts behind that success, view Iowa City’s climate plans and reports.
