The City Council consists of seven members; four represent the City at-large and three represent districts. At-Large Council candidates are nominated by eligible electors (a person qualified to register to vote) residing in Iowa City. District candidates are nominated by eligible electors within their respective districts.

There will be a City Council election on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. The openings will be for one District B seat and two At-Large seats, with terms expiring at noon on January 2, 2030. If three or more candidates file nomination papers for District B or five or more file for At-Large, a Primary election will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

Dates and Deadlines can be found on the Johnson County Auditors November 4, 2025 City and School Election webpage. Those deadlines include filing the candidate affidavit and nominating petition with no fewer than 127 District B and 166 At-Large eligible elector signatures between Monday, August 11, 2025 and 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
