Administrative offices at City Hall and other facilities will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 23, 2018, for the Thanksgiving holiday. A Memorial Day celebration will be held at Oakland Cemetery, 1000 Brown Street, on Monday, May 30 beginning at 9:30 a.m. The celebration will include an invocation, an honoring of deceased, unknown soldiers, a reading of the Gettysburg Address and the Retiring of the Colors. This event is sponsored by the Grand Army of the Republic, American Legion Post 17 and Auxiliary, and the Johnson County Military Affairs Association, in conjunction with Iowa City Parks and Recreation. There is no fee for this event and the public is invited to attend.
In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to Opstad Auditorium at City High, 1900 Morningside Drive, Iowa City
In addition to the service at Oakland Cemetery, a ceremony to honor soldiers and sailors lost at sea will be held at 8:30 a.m. on the bridge on Park Road, off North Dubuque Street. At 11 a.m., a second Memorial Day service will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 2600 Muscatine Avenue, Iowa City, to honor veterans.
