Become a lifeguard! Training courses are now available through Iowa City Parks and Recreation.
Several class dates are available:
Weeknight classes generally run 5-9 p.m. and weekend classes run 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.
Successful participants will receive an American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, which is valid for 2 years.
To enroll in the Lifeguarding course, you must be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled class session and demonstrate the following skills:
Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing
Tread water for 2 minutes, legs only starting in the water
Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
To register online, either set up your new ActiveNet account or to log in to your existing account. You’ll be able to sign up and pay for classes online through the ActiveNet system.
