Mark your calendar for Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019, and help celebrate the beautiful Monarch Butterfly!
The fourth annual, and free, Monarch Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at a new location: the Iowa City Municipal Airport, Hangar L72, 1801 Riverside Drive.
All are invited to view caterpillars, chrysalis, and beautiful, orange adult Monarchs, and a collection of bees and other pollinators.
Monarch butterfly populations have declined by more than 90 percent in the past two decades.
Iowa City is committed to creating an environment that will allow monarchs to thrive and rehabilitate during the summer months, and is taking several steps to help support the monarch butterfly.
The event will also feature a variety of craft activities, a photo booth, snacks, a variety of nature and nonprofit exhibits, the Iowa City Public Library Bookmobile, as well as several handouts and free gifts.
The Monarch Festival is being held as part of the Iowa City Optimist Club's Annual Pancake Breakfast, which runs from 7 a.m. to noon. The breakfast will also display classic cars and a variety of aircrafts.
