The Downtown Liaison Officer helps to establish relationships and communication channels with local businesses and pedestrians, and is a positive visible presence throughout the Downtown and Northside Marketplace. Officer Fowler is available between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and Officer Farrell is available from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday to 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. rotating days. The Iowa City Police Department has three officers assigned as liaisons to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) community. The Department’s goals for having the liaisons is to:
- Foster positive relations between the LGBTQ community and the Iowa City Police Department by providing a liaison for community members who may be crime victims or have information or issues of concern that the police department could assist with.
- Assist in productive dialogue with investigative units concerning LGBTQ-related crimes.
- Work in partnership with other city agencies, other law enforcement entities and community-based organizations, education and involvement in other LGBTQ-related issues.
- Maintain an interactive role in recruit-based and in-service police trainings regarding the LGBTQ community.
