What do I do if my car has been towed?
Call the routine line 356-5275. Be prepared to give them your plate number and vehicle information. They will check the impounded vehicle file and see if the vehicle has been impounded in Iowa City. Vehicles will be released to the registered owner or with the authorization of an on-duty watch commander. To obtain your vehicle you will need to bring ID and exact cash to pay any unpaid parking tickets. The towing fee will include a minimum daily storage fee. (The Parking Department may place a vehicle on the tow list once the vehicle has accumulated $50 or more in unpaid parking tickets.)

What do I need to provide to officers to have a vehicle towed out of my private parking space?

What are the sirens that go off on Wednesday mornings?
Johnson County Emergency Management tests the Emergency Warning Sirens on the 1st Wednesday of each month. If the siren goes off at another time tune to a local radio or television station for more information.

Can the police unlock my car?
The police department may unlock cars if they do not have power locks or windows. In addition there are several models of cars which the department cannot unlock. There is a $10 fee for unlocking a vehicle. If we cannot unlock your vehicle you may contact a locksmith or a towing company.
