Neighborhood & Development Services Annual Report
The report provides a department overview, outlines the responsibilities of the department, and highlights annual accomplishments. Affordable housing accomplishments were reported separately previously. They are now included in the Neighborhood Services section and the 2021 Affordable Housing Year-End Report is in the appendix.
Development Services
The staff in Development Services assists the public through planning and building inspection services. The Division coordinates all long range planning efforts, reviews all development proposals, and conducts related building inspection services. Historic Preservation efforts are also coordinated through the Development Services Division.
Economic Development
The Economic Development Division works to assist both existing businesses and those considering starting, expanding or relocating to Iowa City. The division serves as the City's primary point of contact for all business needs.
Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC) - Transportation Planning Services
MPOJC is designated by the Governor of the State of Iowa as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Iowa City Urbanized Area. The MPOJC staff can assist with your transportation related questions and needs.
Neighborhood Services
The Neighborhood Services Division is responsible for administration of various housing services, including rehabilitation programs and housing programs coordinated through the Housing Authority. The division also provides housing inspection services, facilitates communication and outreach services to neighborhood associations and coordinates Iowa City's public art program. Iowa City's federal Community Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME programs are also administered through the Neighborhood Services Division.
Sustainability Services
Iowa City is committed to being a leader in sustainable community development. The Sustainability Coordinator helps ensure that our public services and planning efforts are rooted in sustainable principles.
