How to apply

The City utilizes a web-based application process through our self-services website. Job openings are also posted electronically there. 

To apply for a job with the City, candidates must submit an application through the self-services website at the time a vacancy is actively posted. Candidates are strongly encouraged to pay close attention to application deadlines for posted positions as deadlines vary by position and are strictly enforced. Resumes may be uploaded and attached to the online application but will not be accepted in place of the online application.

After you have registered as an applicant and submitted your first application, your application will be saved and you will be able to update and use it to apply for future openings. You will have the opportunity to update and edit your application, including tailoring the applicant statement, each time you submit it for a new position. 

The Iowa City Public Library provides computer workstations for public use.

How to stay informed about current openings

Where to view current job openings 

Current job openings for City of Iowa City Departments are posted on the City’s self-services website and in the main lobby at City Hall. Applications can only be submitted for positions that are currently posted. 

Public Safety Recruitment

The City of Iowa City fills vacant Police Officer and Firefighter openings from a hiring list certified by the Civil Service Commission. The certified hiring lists are created through special candidate application and testing processes held when the existing hiring lists are exhausted.

If you would like to be added to the notification list for the next Firefighter recruitment, please email your name to and specify Firefighter. When actively recruiting, detailed information explaining the application and testing process approved by the Civil Service Commission will be listed on the Firefighter Recruitment page.
