The City of Iowa City has launched a recruitment process for the position of Fire Chief, following Chief John Grier's announcement of his intention to retire. The Iowa City Civil Service Commission formally approved the recruitment plan at its September 21, 2021 meeting.

Recruitment Timeline
Step 1: Approval of the Recruitment Plan by the Civil Service Commission (Complete)

Step 2: Recruitment of Candidates (ongoing)

Read the position profile here. Applications, cover letters and resumes are being accepted through November 12, 2021. The position is being advertised via trade-specific and general recruiting websites including both the Iowa and National Association of Professional Fire Chiefs. 

Step 3: Candidate Review

This stage of the process will include responses to a written questionnaire and interview panels involving internal and external stakeholders.

Step 4: Announcement of Finalist Candidate(s)

Reference checks and criminal background checks will be completed at an appropriate time in the process.

Step 5: Civil Service Commission and City Council Approval

The City Manager will announce the appointment of a single candidate. As required by City Code, the City Manager will seek approval from both the Civil Service Commission and the City Council.
