The Iowa City Farmers Market will discontinue its $5 market token program this fall following a comprehensive review of the program and an assessment of its long-term financial risks. The change will not affect the Market's Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) or Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) programs.

The $5 token program was introduced approximately 10 years ago to provide shoppers with an additional payment option and to help vendors participate in the Market at a time when electronic payment technology was less common and less affordable. Since then, payment technology has evolved significantly, and many vendors now accept credit and debit cards directly using convenient, low-cost mobile payment systems.

The decision also follows a recent review of the program prompted by reports of counterfeit market tokens at another Iowa farmers market. As part of its own risk assessment, the Iowa City Farmers Market determined that continuing the $5 token program presents financial risks and liabilities that are no longer appropriate for the Market to assume.

To allow ample time for this transition, the following initial timeline will apply:

• The Iowa City Farmers Market will continue selling $5 tokens through August 29, 2026.
  • This only affects the red $5 non-EBT tokens
  • The blue $1 EBT tokens and the Double Up Food Bucks program will not be impacted.
• Beginning September 5, 2026, the market will no longer sell $5 tokens.

Market patrons are encouraged to spend any remaining $5 tokens, and vendors are encouraged to submit tokens for reimbursement by the end of the 2026 calendar year. Additional information regarding token redemption and reimbursement procedures will be announced in the coming months.
