Improper disposal of batteries in the regular garbage or recycling is a leading cause of landfill and recycling facility fires. Prevent fires and the release of hazardous chemicals in the local environment by properly recycling batteries at local drop-off locations.

Residents of Johnson County and within the city limits of Kalona and Riverside can recycle most types of batteries at no cost at the following drop-off locations:

• Fire Station #2 West (301 Emerald St., Iowa City)
• Ace Hardware East (1558 Mall Dr., Iowa City)
• Earl May Garden Center (1901 Lower Muscatine Rd., Iowa City)
• Ace Hardware North (600 N Dodge St., Iowa City)
• Iowa City City Hall (410 E Washington St., Iowa City)
• Coralville Recreation Center (1506 8th St., Coralville)
• North Liberty Community Center (520 W Cherry St., North Liberty)
• Tiffin City Hall (300 Railroad St., Tiffin)
• Oxford Public Library (112 N Augusta Ave., Oxford)
• Solon Public Library (320 West Main St., Solon)
• Lone Tree City Hall (123 N Devoe St., Lone Tree)
• City of Hills Office (201 N. 1st St., Hills)

Not accepted via the battery drop-off bins

• Sharps or syringes
• Light bulbs
• Damaged batteries and car/boat/lead-acid batteries
  • Damaged batteries or large batteries (such as car, boat, or lead-acid batteries) are only accepted at the Iowa City Landfill's Hazardous Material Collection Facility during weekly residential drop-off hours on Thursday and Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon. Businesses, please call for more information.  
• Electronics 
  • Recycle cell phones, laptops, electric scooters, hoverboards, and other electronics with embedded batteries via the City's electronic recycling program at either the Iowa City Landfill or East Side Recycling Center. More info is available at the Recycling web page. 
• Vapes
• Electric scooter, electric bike, or electric vehicle batteries
• Batteries from businesses
  • Businesses can safely recycle batteries through The Battery Network or via the Hazardous Material Collection Facility once registered. Appointment required and fees apply.
