Spring street sweeping begins in Downtown area; check the schedule to avoid being towed

Post Date:05/19/2026

The City of Iowa City Streets Division has started its street sweeping operations to remove sand and debris from the streets to enhance public safety.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, and Friday, May 22, on-street parking will be prohibited in designated areas to allow street-sweepers to clean the full width of the street. Vehicles not moved will be towed. “No parking” signs will be posted at least 48 hours in advance of any work to alert vehicle owners to move their cars.  If you are a university student who normally parks in one of these areas, plan accordingly so that your vehicle is not towed.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, crews will begin sweeping the Downtown area. Drivers are asked to be patient, as the sweepers are slow-moving and stop periodically to empty debris. Street sweeping in the Downtown area is expected to be completed by Friday, May 22.
