Reminder: do not disturb paint in houses pre-1978; certified lead-safe renovator needed

Post Date:03/13/2026 1:30 PM

The City is reminding homeowners, rental property owners, and tenants that special precautions are required before disturbing any painted surface in residential buildings constructed before 1978. Homes built during this period often contain lead-based paint, which can create serious health risks—especially for children—when it is damaged, sanded, or removed improperly.

Renovation Requirements

Iowa law requires that any renovation that disturbs painted surfaces in pre‑1978 housing or child‑occupied facilities must meet the following requirements:

  • A certified lead‑safe renovator must be involved in the project.
  • Lead‑safe work practices must be used, including containment, cleanup, and disposal procedures designed to prevent lead exposure.

Please visit the State of Iowa's Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing website for more information about lead safe renovation rules. The State of Iowa also hosts a list of currently certified lead-safe renovators on its website.
