During the fall, the City of Iowa City's Parks and Forestry staff will begin planting trees in the right-of-way throughout two areas of town: the neighborhood north of Fairmeadows Park and the neighborhood including Green Mountain Drive, N. Westminster St, and nearby areas.

The trees will be planted in the right-of-way (the strip of land between the sidewalk and the road) throughout residential neighborhoods. City staff have selected the location and species of these trees by considering ground utilities, proximity to other trees, and diversity of species.

All homeowners receiving a tree have already been notified. Not all addresses will receive a tree, and some could receive more than one. There is no cost to homeowners. The City will remain responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the trees planted in the right-of-way, but residents are encouraged to help water the newly planted trees if they are inclined.

Utility flags and markings may appear in the right-of-way throughout these areas as preparation for the planting project.
