Fire Funeral SaluteThe Iowa City Fire Department is dedicated to providing the community progressive, high quality emergency and preventive services. The Insurance Services Office has evaluated the community's fire protection and assigned an ISO rating of Class 3. Fifty-seven full-time firefighters provide fire, medical, rescue, and hazardous materials emergency response to approximately 63,027 residents in the 25 square-mile incorporated area of Iowa City, including the University of Iowa main campus. The department operates from three fire stations and staffs three engine companies, one rescue/truck company, and a command vehicle.

In addition to responding to over 3,500 emergency calls annually, the Iowa City Fire Department provides proactive prevention services such as fire safety inspections of commercial and University properties, site plan reviews, and fire and environmental safety education. Iowa City Fire Department community projects include: fire safety education, fire station tours, juvenile firesetters intervention, a mobile fire safety education trailer, ride-along program, the Safety Village, and is a co-leader with Mercy Hospital of the Johnson County SAFE KIDS Coalition.
