Suggestions for Hours of Operation

  • I assume it's because of the overlap with commuters, but is there any way at all the Weds night FM could start at 5 or 5:15?
  • Longer on weekend due to sleeping in. Even if they can start at a later time on Saturday.
  • Maybe the parking would not be as bad if the time started a little later, since it seems like the Farmers Market vendors and the normal business day parking people seem to conflict so much at the current time.
  • Need longer day on Sat!
  • Later in day during weekend.
  • Could there be an earlier start time....7:00 am or 7:15.
  • start at 5 on Wed
  • I would like to start earlier on Wednesdays.
  • Start sooner than 5:30
  • it's the age old parking issue
  • The main reason I don't attend more often is that timing can be inconveniet. If I am elsewhere at 5:30 on Wednesday or early on Saturday morning, I miss out. I would like to see it earlier in the afternoon and more frequently.
  • Too short a time on Saturday
  • Please, please, please start at 5 pm in stead of 5:30 pm.
  • start and end an hour earlier and later
  • should be open until early afternoon on Saturday
  • We wish it went to noon rather than just 11:30 (actually, we'd like all day, but noon seems like a reasonable compromise!)
  • I'd like to see more produce.
  • I'd like to have a Monday market also, 3-6pm.
  • Wouldf like to have the Wed. market start earlier, no later than 5:00. I can't wait the 30 minutes and just head home after work.
  • Parking is a problem Saturday mornings. Having to plug a meter is truly annoying. I know several people avoid the markets for that very reason.
  • Should be open in the mornings. If that's not possible, expand the Wednesday hours to start before 5:30! I would have gone every week if it was open from 4-7 on Wednesday afternoons.
  • too early Sat morning, ends too soon
  • It would be nice if the Wednesday evening market opened at 5 PM and the Saturday market lasted somewhat longer.
  • On Wednesday`s--5:00PM to 7:00PM
  • I use all 3 locations of FM - Coralville, Sycamore and IC. It is nice to have a choice of time.
  • Offer this from 0700-1300
  • Earlier on Wed starting at 4:30 or 5
  • i wish wed evening started earlier - around 4:30 would be ideal
  • Opening the market at 4:30 or 5:00 would enable everyone who works downtown to stop at the market on their walk home.
  • 1. No strollers in market
    2. No bicycles in market
    3. More space between asiles
  • I prefer that the market begin at 5:00
  • Longer hours on Saturday.
  • Seems to work pretty well.
  • I work in City Hall and it's highly annoying that the Farmer's Market doesn't start until 5:30 on Wednesday. The vendors are always there early and I really don't don't have time to wait around for 1/2 hour.
  • would like the farmers market on Wednesday to start earlier - 30 minutes after work is too long to wait.
  • Please stay open longer on Saturdays!
  • I'd like to see it open during the week at 4:30 or a little earlier so I can stop in before I pick up my kids from daycare.
  • I usually go early on Saturdays, but not always. Extending the time to Noon from 11:30 was a good idea. Would use more often on Wednesdays if it opened at 5 instead of 5:30
  • It needs to start earlier. I don't like waiting around for 30 mins. just to by some vegetables. Alot of people who work in the downtown area share this feeling.
  • Start the Market earlier - perhaps 4:30 or 5:00 p.m.
  • I am never downtown on Saturday morning and always need to make a special trip. Holding it on additional evenings during the week would be very beneficial.
  • I would like the Market to open at 5 pm on Wednesdays although I have no idea how you could manage this with parking.
  • START LATER IN THE DAY.
  • Start Wednesday's market at 5:00 pm.
  • would like it to run later when open during the week
  • think about starting at 5:00 on wednesdays! - and i would love to see an indoor market in the winter season - maybe at the Rec Center?
  • 5 to 8 pm might work better
  • I'd like to see the market open until noon...
  • starting the market a little later in the morning wouldn't bother me.
  • I appreciate being able to attend early in the morning.
  • It would be nice to have an additional time other than Wednesday and Saturday especially to buy fresh produce when in season.
  • Though I tended to show up too early on Wednesday and have to wait until 530. Not sure why that is the practice, perhaps for out of town vendors?
  • Though I tended to show up too early on Wednesday and have to wait until 530. Not sure why that is the practice, perhaps for out of town vendors?
  • The Wednesday market should open at 5pm
  • It would be most helpful if the Wednesday market would start selling at 5:00 p.m. so that we could shop as we leave work. Many of us are off at 4:30 and waiting around until 5:30 was just too long. We would have shopped on Wednesdays if we could have purchased at 5:00 or even eerlier!
  • longer hours
  • I would like to see the downtown market open one hour earlier (4:30)
  • These vendors need to understand when the market starts. People in the ramp can hardly get out around 5pm and then they are treated like crap as they are trying to move their vehicles
  • The times worked for me because I am used to the schedule.
  • I would enjoy it more, if it was centered more around lunch so that it could be a place to eat a meal.
  • Wednesday Market should begin at 5:00 p.m.
  • at sycamore start at 2 p m
  • I plan it into my schedule
  • Saturday morning only - make it a spectacle!!
  • Keep it open later on Saturdays and perhaps add an another evening during the week.
  • Keep it open later on Saturdays and perhaps add an another evening during the week.
  • Might be advantageous to start the Wednesday market at 5:00 or 5:15 to make it more convenient for people dropping in after work.
  • I would attend every week if it started earlier, at least 5:15.
  • Would like start time @ 5pm.
  • more often
  • I'd love to see the farmers market season extended beyond the current 6 month period. It's encouraging that another market or two will be held at the rec center later in the fall. But is there any reason that it cannot be held there, or someplace else, on a continuing weekly basis?
  • would like til 1PM
  • Wednesday starting at 5:00.
  • Go til noon
  • Would like to see the market open at 5 p.m. to catch people as they leave work.
  • Starting at 5pm (or even earlier possibly 4pm) on Wednesday. Most families with young children are eating dinner by 5:30.
  • It would be very nice for City staff to have the market open at 5:00 on Wednesdays. I think it would also provide more Wednesday business for the vendors. I know a lot of City staff who would buy after work but they do not want around for half an hour
  • It might be extended for another hour.
  • It would be nice to have another night per week available, but I understand the complications with that!
  • stay open later on saturdays: lots of times i missed it because i had other things going on that morning and wanted to go but missed it.
open earlier on tuesdays? if it's a possibility...i realize that would be cutting into business parking in the garage...
  • I think it is great that they have two times a week.
  • Please start the Wednesday market at 5 pm so people can go right after work.
  • There needs to be more vendors. I've heard it's very hard to get a booth as the market is considered "full". I'd like to see a LOT more art.
  • I would like to see the market stay open a little later. Perhaps until 12:30 or 1:00.
  • Comment on attendance: I probably attend 2-3 times a month.
  • I would suggest that farmer's market continue throughout the year
  • more product and less soap, craftsy things.
  • I would need an earlier start on Wednesday. By the time the market opens, I need to be home cooking dinner.
  • Gets way too crowded so the number of vendors should be reduced from June 1 - September 30 to only those selling food products.
  • It's wonderful!
  • Extend hours a little later into afternoon
  • I think the Wednesday market starts at 5:30. Since I shop on my way home, I might use it more often if it started at 4:30 or 5
  • Twice a week is good and the hours seem convenient for the majority of shoppers
  • It would be nice if the farmer's market on Wednesday started earlier for people who get off work at 4:30-5:00.
  • I would attend the Wed market if it started at 5:00 at the latest. I and a lot of people leave rather than wait for 30 minutes after workday ends.
  • I wish the Wednesday market would start earlier.
  • Start earlier both days of the week
  • The Saturday hours should extend into the afternoon.
  • begin at 5:00 pm on wednesdays
  • I think it's splendid. There are alternate dates and sites in other parts of town so one could go to a Farmer's Market virtually every day! And I like the twice a week rhythm
  • Go 1/2 hour longer........
  • Often vendors seemed to be partially to completely closed up by 7:15pm. Since the hours say until 7:30pm, one might expect them to continue to display their items until the prescribed time.
  • Open at 0700, so people getting off work can buy items and get on their way home. I would probably shop every market day if this was the case.
  • I wish the Wednesday market could be started by 4:30 instead of 5:30. THat would allow some of us who need to pick up kids and get dinner started to just get our food on the way home. This would cut down on the conjestion at the market as well.
  • Start at 5pm on Wednesdays.
  • start a little earlier for the evening one. It would be nice to stop in on my way home from work
  • another day per week in addition to the Wed & Sat markets; possibly longer hours on the open days as well -- evening hours work best for me!
  • i think that the market should open a little earlier, even 4:30 on wednesdays.
  • from 7:00 am to 12:00
  • Generally, of course, the more hours the better. I'd like to see it go into Saturday afternoon. If it could be supported, three days a week.
  • Stay open later on Saturday.
  • Parking is a real issue. especially when they roam around and pass out tickets while you are shopping. Maybe a better location for the market would expand the parking and the vendors. Most of the vendors there are wonderful but a little more and with some variety would be wonderful! I understand "newbies" cannot get a space because they are taken from year to year...it is time to expand :)
  • Wednesday start time should be 4:30 or 5:00 at the latest
  • Later hours on Saturday would be nice.
  • I wish it started a little earlier on Wednesday--seems like we have to stand and wait, wait, wait for it to start.
  • Wednesday market should begin at 5
  • Starting earlier on Wednesdays - many at the University are done earlier in the summer and an earlier time would allow for them not to go home between work/school and the Farmers Market
  • The hours work well for my household.
  • have the hours on Saturday begin and end later by an hour or two.
  • Please have the Wednesday Farmers Market begin at 5:00
  • Iwould like to see the Wednesday market begin at 4 or 4;30 for those of us who must prepare an early dinner.
  • Another late afternoon market during the week would be nice. E.g., Tues. and Thur. instead of just Wed.
  • More hours might be better, but I think everyone understands when it is open. So basically it is fine. A few times I was a bit too late, so it would be great if it could be open until 1:00pm, but really, it is fine the way it is.
  • I would like the Wednesday market to open at 5 instead of 5:30. Much more convenient for people to go there right after work.
  • Staying open later would be nice
  • Would like to have the market year round --maybe in the rec center in the winter.
  • The market at the Sycamore Mall were too early. The market was over by the time I got home at 6pm.
  • Seems fine at Sycamore Mall
  • Longer on Saturdays
  • Have market longer on Wednesdays.
  • I like the hours
  • I wish they were a little longer
  • Start Wednesday at 5
  • More weekdays and Sunday.
  • Could be later on saturday
  • Chauncy Swam additinal days
  • later start on saturdays
  • Open earlier on Wed
  • Need more time
  • It would be nice for the wed. evenings market to begin at 5
  • More Hours
  • Later Start time
  • Later in the day on Saturday.
  • It is great that I can go after work on Wednesday and Saturday Morning.
  • Market needs to start earler on wedsdays. 4 or 5 pm to 7 would be nice
  • I would like it to run a little longer, maybe till 3:00, on Saturdays.
  • I mostly attended the Wednesday Farmer's Market because it was easy to stop by after work, but I would have prefered to patronize the Saturday one. Being open just an hour or two longer on Saturday would help.
  • Start at 445
  • Appreciate the extended time to 12:30.
  • It would be nice if it ran later than noon on Saturday.
  • closing at noon is too strict. open more days woudl be appreciated
  • Love the Saturday hours - Wednesday could start a little earlier.
  • Start at 5pm on Wednesday
  • Consider staying open until 2:00
  • It would be nice if it started a little earlier on Wednesday, maybe 4 or 4:30 instead of 5:30
  • Would like to see the booths open at 5:00
  • start before 5:30 on wednesday, people get off work and have to wait for the market to open.
  • 7:30-11:30 was better
  • I love the layout, the diversity of the vendors and the family atmosphere.
  • I really appreciate the extended Saturday hours this year. Please start the Wednesday hours a little earlier next year.
  • Wednesday night could be extended to start a little earlier. Saturdays are great!
  • Need to go a little later
  • Open at 5 pm
  • But a little earlier on Saturday would be nice.
  • Would like to extend hours into early afternoon on Saturdays.
  • Would it be possible for the Weds night market to start at 5:15? I realize you're wanting to get people out but sometimes I just head home instead of waiting around.
  • I like the fact that the market on Saturday is now open till noon. I'd like to see the market stay open all year round but I know that's not very practical.
  • it is just about perfect !!
  • later ending time
  • The Saturday market could end an hour or two later.
  • I would really like to see that the sales begin at 5:00 on Wednesdays. Many folks are on their way from work and I think it would increase sales.
  • Please please please consider opening the Wednesday Farmers Market earlier. Open at 4 or 3, or even 5. I understand there is a conflict between City Hall parking until 5, but couldn't permit holders park on other floors so the bottom floor can be reserved for the public and an earlier farmers market? I suspect you lose a lot of business from City Hall employees who get off work at 5:00 because they do not want to wait an extra 30 minutes for the market to open. I would like to see the Wednesday market open at 3:00. I would also like to see more vendor spaces at the Wednesday market (like Saturday's has). The Saturday market hours, and expanded vendor area, are both satisfactory in my opinion.
  • Maybe have a chalkboard of who is/isn't at the market that afternoon or morning. So many times I've gone for a particular vendor and have been disappointed when the vendor I was hoping to see wasn't there ...and it took me times around the place to look for them.
  • Please start the Wednesday market at 5 pm so I can go right after I get off of work.
  • I like the hours and have shopped on both Wednesday nights and also Saturday mornings - depending on my needs.
  • maybe have it run a little longer.
  • Start 30 minutes earlier on Wed.
  • I wish it were open all the itme, but 6-8 hours on the current days would be nicer.
  • Later times/ rotation of days
  • I like the hours - early risers can get great stuff! Running later than noon wouldn't enhance my experience.
  • Longer Saturday hours
  • Could start at 5
  • good
  • Stay open a bit logner
  • 3 pm starting time
  • Earlier on Wednesdays

Suggestions for Location

  • I think it great! Was the idea if using downtown streets to provide for more vendors? If need to expand - close Washington or have some venors of a given nature in the Rec, gym.
  • Offer companies like the one I work for to order in bulk then deliver. Written order w/pics or just see suggestions below.
  • I would love to see it downtown and longer day SAturday!
  • Was really NOT a fan of the plan that involved moving the location to the ped mall for only some markets. Realistically the way this would work for me is that I'd drive to the parking ramp, find no one there, curse and drive home. I simply will not keep a rotating schedule in mind. Parking for the ped mall is horrid, and we'd have to carry our purchases further. That's ignoring the panhandlers, pre-game drinking, drunken yelling of obscenties and other aspects of the ped mall I'd rather not deal with while I'm trying to buy produce.
  • Location is good, but it would be nice to try having one in the downtown area. Perhpas in the summer, it could be on a Friday afternoon and continue in the evening. It could be part of the Friday night downtown concert. Let's start thinking outside of the box. I am not suggesting a permanent change, but trying something different to expose more people to the positive things of a Farmer's Market.
  • I think the parking garage is nice when the weather isn't good, because everything is covered. However, I think it would be a better shopping experience if it was outside on the street in nice weather, and perhaps moved into the ramp in the rain.
  • Current Downtown location is hard to find for those unfamiliar with the event. It is not easily visible outside of the parking ramp.
  • it can become rather congested within the ramp, and makes it hard to stop and see each vendors wares.
  • I feel the market has outgrown the space. I like the idea of an open air market. I live in Cedar Rapids and work in Iowa so I get to see both. I think the change to the open air market in CR has been positive. I would love to see the Market in the downtown area.It would draw more people to this area who normally might not spend time in downtown IC. It would give them a chance to see what we have to offer in downtown Iowa City...more than just bars. It really can be a very family friendly destination!
  • again the parking. The ramp has it's pluses and minuses. It's dark and crowded but it's protected from the rain.
  • Move downtown for better access
  • I would like less crowding.
  • Hate the ramp
  • I would like to see farmer's market outside from under the parking ramp...downtown, maybe? College Street Park maybe? Iowa Avenue maybe?
  • Consider moving to the outside location, Ped Mall
Outdoor markets like Madison, or New York City, or many other places are very special and vibrant
  • I like the location but maybe add a night on the pedestrian mall
  • I've adjusted, but the lighting is a little dim, more outdoor spaces would be welcome.
  • Expand the market out into Washington Street. More room for other vendors.
  • Open at 5:15 on Wednesdays, rather than 5:30 so can go on the way home from work. Gets a bit crowded...more space? We go on Wednesdays.
  • I like the location where it is. There is parking usually around the area that is convenient and easy to get to.
  • Too hard to park so don't go that often.
  • An open air market would be great, but it's difficult to do that when it rains. I think current location is great.
  • The parking lot stinks - literally. The Market should be downtown, ped mall or close off one of the streets. City park would be ok too. It is depressing to be in a parking garage buying fresh fruits and vegetables. I spend extra money to buy organic and I have to do it in a smelly ramp. There is also no place to stop and talk with neighbors, you are in the way of vendors if you do or are blocking walking traffic. Having more space with different areas to break off into would be great. I would also like to get a cup of coffee downtown and if the market was in the ped mall this would be easier.
  • Somewhere outside of a parking garage would be nice. It doesn't provide much in terms of a "community" or "outdoor/harvest" atmosphere.
  • the downtown farmer's market is a wonderful element of this community. great centralized location.
  • I would like to see Farmer's Market held downtown. This will allow substantial growth to the market and no need for the long waiting list.
  • I don't like the parking for the ramp and that is why I use the other markets - but I don't have a better solution for it. It is so easy to hit someone when cars are coming in and out and people are destracted.
  • Expand the area to a larger area that you can invite more vendors
  • parking garage undermines the tone of the market. Tough to get excited about local produce and crafts while sucking in car fumes.
  • I like it that it is covered if it rains. It might be fun to try one week to have it downtown and block off streets- only if it works for the vendors.
  • Please do not move
  • Location should be changed if number of vendors is limited by location.
  • Very crowed and not stroller friendly especially when people stop to talk in the middle of the vendors isle
  • Please get it out of the stinky and dreary parking ramp. Put it in the open air.
  • i think the market should be moved to the downtown ped mall and make it more of a community event with exsisting brick & mortar businesses
  • Although I appreciate the convenience of the current location (in regards to parking and rain), the market tends to be so crowded I can barely get through. I hate to think what it is like for individuals with strollers, walkers, wheelchairs, etc.
  • I liked the thought of being more open aired and closing off certain streets.
  • mix it up, out door and parking ramp
  • I like having the Market in a sheltered environment - that way it's open and accessible no matter what the weather is
  • Larger venue to draw and handle large crowds
  • 1. Good location
    2. Bigger
    3. Extend the schedule
  • We really need to move the FM up to the Ped Mall during nice weather. If you've ever been to Madison, Seattle, New York, etc.. having an outdoor market is just a wonderful venue. Iowa City is such a great community, it's hard to understand not having this experience as part of our total experience!! During bad weather the FM can always go back into the dark, dingy garage.
  • I like the protection from the heat and rain inside the parking ramp.
  • While the parking garage does provide protection from the elements and parking nearby, it also seems cold and sterile. Is it possible to expand it onto the adjoining streets/park. Maybe use Chauncy Swan park for some vendors, or close off the block of Washington in front of City Hall, or use the rec center parking lot. Moving the vendors out of the artificial light would make their produce look better. I bought a tomato that I thought was yellow, but when I got it home it was orange.
  • Please do not move mkt to downtown/ped mall. It's great undercover as it is now with good parking available.
  • Even though it can become VERY crowded, and our double stroller has run over a few toes, we really enjoy the location!! I love that it's a covered space. If it's raining, you can still enjoy the market! We like to go to the Co-Op afterwards, or stroll downtown a bit, so the location is great. I say "some improvement" b/c of how cramped it can get. I don't know if there would be a different way to set-up the stands so that the walking space can be just a bit bigger. Not by much, but even a few feet could help. A lot of people have strollers or wheelchairs, and it can become quite tough to get around. We saw several stands with a lot of empty space between their table and their car. Even scooting them back (if they don't require a lot of room), would be fantastic.
  • When busy, it is very difficult to get up and down the aisles. Baby strollers, shoppers, and people stopping to chat add to the cluttered aisles.
  • Leave it alone. Moving downtown or elsewhere will only work if the vendors demand the move.
  • you could open up Washington St. and have more vendors there - open air. Those vendors who wished to could stay under cover.
  • I love where it is, but the parking situation is impossisble
  • having more outdoor stands (in the park) would be nice.
  • I like the fact that it's sheltered.
  • This area is too congested when it is going on and the area is not big enough to handle the crowds. It can be very frustrated to try to go very little parking available and you can't get through the market with all the very rude people just standing around chatting in the way. It should be in a more open area.
  • Would love the market to be moved to downtown and expanded to allow even more vendors.
  • I would like to see it located in a more open air location.
  • Needs more space - aisles are very cramped with people having strollers, etc.
  • The enclosed area is perfect, but it needs to be bigger. My partner will not go to the market because of the elbow-to-elbow crowds.
  • I like the location of Iowa City's Farmer's Market.
  • MOVE LOCATION OUT OF DOWNTOWN
  • If you rectify the ticketing at the rec center
  • lighting is dim so harder to see for older people
  • It's in a great spot except for the police hanging around giving out tickets. Free parking would be GREAT!
  • It is a great space. It is very user friendly. I can buy lots of great stuff & get it to my car fairly easily.
  • please keep in same place below the parking ramp, this is great axcess for the the vendors and buyers as well.
  • The current location does provide some shelter, but it can also get very crowded and limits the number of vendors.
  • I love this location. Perfect. Centrally located, parking easy, protection during inclement weather. Location made for this activity
  • We like that it is held in the parking garage which helps to keep us and the produce out of the sun, however, if there could be a better location that offers more space for vendors and does not eat up parking spaces that would be helpful. We usually have to park quite far away.
  • I don't really like shopping in a parking garage, however when it's raining its nice.
  • It can be difficult to attend when there is a home football game scheduled in the morning.
  • The area is too small and extremely congested. I do not want want to carry purchases through the parking ramp or up levels to my vehicle especially potted plants, mellons, etc., etc. and have to make multiple trips to the vehicle. The market area is congested with people trying to get through a very small area. It is like being amidst livestock.
  • Many vendors have mentioned that there was a movement to get the market out of the ramps, which they were against, not wanting to spend hours out in the summer sun. As a happy patronizer of the market, I support whatever makes the vendors happy!
  • Although the parkiing ramp isn't a pretty location, it protects merchants and customers from rain and wind. That is more imprortant to me than a pretty ambiance. The worst feature of the ramp is the lighting which makes it impossible to tell the true color of items.
  • Downtown: great. Parking ramp: Lacks aesthetics but great on rainy days or blistering hot evenings. A trade off. Maybe we need a mural on the walls or something.
  • Downtown: great. Parking ramp: Lacks aesthetics but great on rainy days or blistering hot evenings. A trade off. Maybe we need a mural on the walls or something.
  • Great location. The market can be held rain or shine!
  • location would be fine if the type of vendor was limited to garden produce.
  • The downtown location if very convenient, as is the Sycamore location. Both have ample parking in the vacinity and there seems to be enough room for vendors
  • Do this elsewhere or give the vendors a citation for setting up before 5:15pm
  • The parking garage is great
  • What is nice about the current location is that it is covered. It does, though, feel like a parking garage. It is nice that the market activities have spilled out into chauncey swan park, which I think adds a lot to the event.
  • parking ramp is great if rain or hot but is so cold when the wind blows through, althoug I can not think of a better mostly outdoor place
  • as a person who has a parking permit for Chauncy Swan ramp, i think it would be much safer if Wed followed the Sat parking rules. I have had many close calls leaving the ramp. I think requiring upper level parking after 5pm would be ideal. Close off the main level completely to vehicle traffic.
  • IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE SOME STALLS IN THE PARK ON SUNY DAYS
  • Since most of the market is covered it is not dependent on the weather.
  • great location
  • I know that the farmers like the shelter, but an event outdoors downtown would be very nice.
  • Have on Saturdays only and expand it into the outdoor park adjacent.
  • It would be nice to have it out in the open sometimes but weather is then always a factor. In general the current location is pretty good.
  • Great where it is!!!
  • The curremt site is excellent for days when it is raining.
  • The curremt site is excellent for days when it is raining.
  • I like the location.
  • So glad it is covered
  • good location
  • It is congested and hard to move around when crowded in tha parking ramp
  • I find downtown to be convenient however the walkways get very tight. With the increase in vendors - which is great - there is no where to go as a shopper. Could it be expanded into the parking lot behind the Rec Center?
  • The market is crowded so it would be nice to spill out into the street. I like the current location and the available parking. LOVE the fact the market is by a pocket park which allows visitors to sit and enjoy music and food.
  • The only thing that is a problem during the Wed nite markets is that the vendors try to set up before people are able to exit their spaces. Some clarification should be made in this area.
THe Market begins at 5:30, so many folks are leaving their jobs at 5 and finding it very difficult to get out, and the vendors are irritated because they can't set up
  • A location with free parking
  • Location is good.
  • Please leave market where located at this time.
  • I would prefer it to be held outdoors. The lights in the parking garage make it difficult to see the color of vegetables accurately, and in fact, can make some foods look unappetizing. I know vendors might have to buy covers in case of rain, but farmer's markets are held outdoors in MN and it rains there, too. I would just like to see clearly the food I am buying. And, the parking garage smells damp and musty.
  • The maket should be brought downtown a few times a year as an event to attract new patrons
  • I like the fact that the area is covered.
  • I like that it is a covered area and that it is in the downtown area. There is plenty of parking and it is very accessible.
  • Farmers markets thrive when the are outdoors. Witness the success of local markets in many big cities. A market under a tent on Iowa Avenue would attract throngs of walkers and make the city center a tourist destination on weekends.
  • This is an ideal location for the market. Do NOT even think about moving it to the downtown area where there would be no shelter from the elements.
  • the downtown Iowa City location in the parking ramp is a good central location.
  • I like the location, but do feel as if the market is still too small.
  • I have mixed feelings. I have been to other markets that are more appealing on warm, sunny days because they are in the sun. However, I also appreciate knowing I'll be dry at the market whether we have rain or sun. I also like that it is so easy to complete my shopping next door at the coop.
  • The location under the Chauncey Swam ramp does not bother me. But I feel sorry for all the vendors who have to brave the cool, windy weather in the late fall. I enjoy the holiday season Farmers Market in the Recreation Center, but I do not think that is a good long term solution due to the congestion in the gym. If a large, open area still in the general downtown area were to present itself, it might be worth considering.
  • I would rather see the farmer's market not in a parking ramp where cars and carbon gases are.
  • I like the location. It keeps the produce cool in the summer, and it allows you to happily shop in the rain. I depend on the market for my veggies in the season, and want the shelter when i shop. I also like the fact that I can quickly run to the Coop from the same parking place.
  • This is a great location, especially if it rains. parking is good too.
  • The location is good in the parking ramp, especially if it is raining, but it does get very crowded in the aisles
  • Current location should be backup for bad-weather days; otherwise, should be outdoors in attractive setting.
  • In many ways the location is perfect: centrally located, easy parking, close to NP, and the little park. I can't think of any way to much improve the location, but if it moves I hope that the attributes mentioned above can be maintained.
  • Present location is perfect. Protected from the elements, easy access; good for buyers and sellers.
  • The parking garage is ideal for rainy or super-hot days. If not for the protection, I would not attend on days it's raining.
  • I like the current location. It's convenient for parking and the covered ramp is great given the uncertainties of the weather
  • You could extend out into Washington St. and allow for some open air booths.
  • It would be great to get the market out in the open on days when weather permits. The pedestrian mall maybe?? Or Madison style around the Old Capital?
  • the lighting in the ramp is very bad; it distorts the color of vegetables and flowers. It can be very cold in the ramp.
  • Great location - protected in bad weather, easy access
  • move it outside where open markets belong - downtown maybe
  • it is in a great location. even if it rains or snows you can still go.
  • ramp is dark. glad when it is rainy though.
  • close down linn street from iowa ave to burlington st on saturdays and let people see what else downtown has to offer.
  • Again, perfect. central to all parts of town. There's ALWAYS easy Parking. one does not have to carry stuff far.
  • Seems too hemmed in by being in the ramp....is there an open air location that could be found?
  • I am not crazy about having the farmers market in a parking structure. It's just not aesthetically pleasing. I know the vendors don't want an open air parket, but perhpas a new covered area could be developed somewhere in this neighborhood.
  • Move to a location outside when weather permits! Use Washington Street or Iowa Ave.
  • Only due to parking. In the ramp is nice for weather protection
  • location is excellent
  • DO NOT MOVE IT!!!
  • while i know folks have been rallying for outdoor markets, those are often plagued by low attendance during bad weather. and really, i would likely start to avoid it if it moved downtown--much further from my house. ideally, one should be able to walk less than six blocks to a market--farm or small grocers. especially as the city grows. to perhaps an effort could be made to enhance the look of the vendors booths, though, through unified banners provided by the city through a design competition?? and perhaps again, satellite markets in the neighborhoods that one can walk to easily.
  • It is within walking distance to our home so the location is great for us.
  • I think it would be great to be downtown occasionaly. The Iowa Avenue area would be good.
  • It's a convenient but dreary location. Farmer markets elsewhere are often held on downtown streets that are closed down for the market. I'd love to see the entire block closed to traffic and covered with tents for the market.
  • I rent a parking space in Chauncy and cant pasrk there on Sat and Wed night--I dont see anyone offering to give me a rebate on my rent--move the market!
  • I would like the market to be out in the light. In the early and late season, it is often very cold in the dark under the parking ramp while it is more pleasant and warm in the sunlight.
  • Parking is a real issue. especially when they roam around and pass out tickets while you are shopping. Maybe a better location for the market would expand the parking and the vendors. Most of the vendors there are wonderful but a little more and with some variety would be wonderful! I understand "newbies" cannot get a space because they are taken from year to year...it is time to expand
  • good to have cover in case of rain, but the parking ramp is not the most aesthetically pleasing location.
  • The location is great! More bike racks in the area would be nice and a restriction on people walking bikes and strollers through the middle of the crowd would solve a lot of the congestion problems.
  • I like the central location.
  • The ground floor of a parking ramp is a dreary place for a farmers market, though it does keep vendors and customers out of the rain and sun. A different place would be nice, but is perhaps unavailable.
  • Like it where it is
  • get it out of auto ramp
  • The farmer's market should be in the ped mall or at least in downtown proper. I avoid the farmer's market to a large degree because I detest the atmosphere. In addition, it has outgrown it's location. Too many people are packed into that unsalubrious, dark atmosphere!! I cannot express to you my disappointment in the location of a farmer's market that otherwise would be an enjoyable experience.
  • The number of vendors and of customers has increased so that the crowds at market-time are much too great. Parents with strollers get stuck; old people get bumped into things; children get lost in the forest of taller adults. And to top it off, the crowds make it difficult to see the goods displayed for sale. A much larger space is needed.
  • While the shelter of the ramp is good in inclement weather, the lighting is terrible and often makes the food look bad
  • I like the cover of the parking ramp
  • Easy to access regardless of mode of transport
  • Don't like the parking ramp!
  • It's very convenient where it is: easy to walk or bike to, plenty of parking if needed, centrally located, and DRY if weather is rainy
  • Don't mess-- what better way to bring something dead like a parking ramp to life- by using it creatively as something lifegiving like a Farmer's Market. No such thing as rained out for the Iowa City Farmer's market--- we know how Iowa summers can be. Perfect location!!!
  • Its sort of a landmark. I wouldn't move it.
  • I like both locations. The Sycamore Mall is close to my home, and the Chauncy Swan being larger offers more variety and vendors.
  • I wouldn't really care if they had it in a different location once in awhile/once a month. But don't fire me for saying that!
  • I'd prefer downtown for all the sessions. It's cold and windy in that garage and not as fun
  • LEAVE IT!!!
  • I know there were reasons this idea was thrown out, but I like the thought of having it downtown; would bring spill-over business to downtown--in its current location it brings business to the co-op.
  • We like Sycamore Mall
  • I like Sycamore Mall on Tuesdays!
  • Great for sun and rain handicap park above location.
  • Great that it is in a covered location.
  • I love the location becuase it is downtown, covered in case of rain, and has power outlets for the vendors.
  • Iowa Ave 1 X per month
  • Please keep it at the ramp under cover from the elements.
  • I really like the location
  • Keep this location please
  • could do downtown
  • Unpleasant but out of weather
  • very cold in the fall
  • The sat market is way too crowded - more space is needed
  • Is there a better place with more space
  • Garage no fun. Bad Atmosphere. Even if it does rain
  • Add a location - eastside
  • So crowded.
  • I like the current location
  • I love having it in the parking ramp because you don't have to worry about the weather.
  • the parking garage is dismal.
  • be nice to have a downtown market like CR once a mounth. to give more exposore
  • I understand having it in the parking garage is convenient becuase vendors are protected from rain/ hot sun, but it is not an attractive location and feels very dungeon/ cave-like.
  • dont't move them to Iowa Ave. every few weeks
  • I like sycamore mall as well
  • I like the present location
  • Provide more aisle space between vendors to reduce congestion
  • I liked the idea of trying a downtown (in the street)market. I know some of the vendors opposed it, but it works great in Des Moines, Madison, et al.
  • Because of the parking problem.
  • Love that it is located in the parking ramp because of inclement weather.
  • Move it downtown -- pedestrian mall area. Downtown businesses also would benefit.
  • HORRIBLE! its the anti- farmers market. as a European I am disgusted by the atmosphere of the orange lights
  • Great location - especially with nearby parking.
  • Perfect location. Don't move it!
  • I like where it is!!!
  • The Des Moines Farmers Market closes a few streets in downtown, and it is a true weekly event. Vendors bring their own tents. I only like the ramp when it's raining, but even then, an umbrella would keep me just as dry. The parking garage is too cramped and dark.
  • The parking garage is fine if it is raining, however the City fo Iowa City has a very nice dowtonwn. Why don't they consider having the farmers market in the ped mall or possibly closing off a street for the Saturday morning farmer's market...like most cities do. It would gives the local businesses more exposure as well. Particularly the bussiness around the ped mall area. I have frequented the farmer's market several times in the past few years and each time I walk into the parking garage I can't help but feel like I am in a heard of cattle being sent off to the slaughter house. It is very crowded and the lighting is horrible. It does not give the customers a chance to "browse" through. In the end you end up walking out of the area feeling stressed out and relieved you made it thru.
  • An area with more parking would be nice. Parking is difficult in the downtown area already and adding the Farmers Market makes it nearly impossible to find a parking spot within 1/2 mile. Even riding the bus is challenging because it requires a long walk carrying your purchases to the bus stop.
  • it would be great if it was more integrated with the downtown & downtown businesses.
  • DON"T MOVE IT! I like cover when it rains and is cold, with the park and parking close by.
  • Having it under cover is fabulous. There were rainy and windy days that would have been very uncomfortable elseswhere.
  • Don't move it! Being under cover is a godsend that other markets aspire to!!
  • The ramp is a near-perfect location in my opinion.
  • More space would be an improvement, the location isn't all bad, it's just very crowded.
  • The location is great--plenty of parking, covered in case of rain but at a park, right downtown.
  • I think the location is fine.
  • I hate the light in the ramp I don't think it should move around I would like it to be outside and not in a ramp
  • I think the location is great. If it rains you still have protection from the weather.
  • Current location is central and shady with copious nearby parking. Any change in location should not be allowed to compromise these attributes. However, the current location is rather hidden. A more central, visible location that could keep the shade (say with booths or tents) and had good parking, would be an improvement.
  • I continue to find it bizarre that the market is held inside a claustrophobic parking garage rather than outdoors. You should look to Madison and Des Moines to see what an asset an outdoor market can be.
  • I think it would be great if Washington Street from Gilbert to Van Buren was closed down for the Farmers Market. This would eliminate the potential vehicle-pedestrian-bicyclist conflicts here and would allow for some more open air market spaces. I think it would make it a much more enjoyable experience. It is a little clausterphobic in the parking ramp. The Police could use the parking spots on the east side of the building to ensure they can get out in a hurry if they need to.
  • I think the ramp offers best access for vendors and while it may lack certain picturesque appeal, the market needs a diverse base of vendors...who need ease of access and a more all-weather venue.
  • happy that it brings business/people to downtown iowa city and all that the small businesses there have to offer - i feel this is important
  • I think its strange to purchase organic vegetables in a parking ramp full of fumes and oil.
  • The current location is just perfect, in my opinion. If you ARE considering moving the market, parking should be available very close by, and convenient to access. I don't want to carry my heavy bags very far to get to my car (I live out of town and have to drive.) A central location like you have now is crucial (as opposed to moving the market to the east or west side, for example).
  • The location is terrible. While the produce is wonderful, it seems to go against the whole concept of a farmers market to have it in a concrete parking garage. I'd have spent FAR more time shopping and would have consequently spent more money had I not found the place so depressing.
  • Love the shelter of the parking ramp.
  • It's getting quite crowded at times
  • Would appreciate something a little brighter than the parking garage. A dedicated structure (mainly a roof!) like the Davis (CA) farmer's market has, with green space around, would be fantastic.
  • Good location. Easy to find and get to.
  • it is handy to have the roof but it is a bit dreary and when it rains the vendors stand in streams.
  • The open air market is nice, but it is also nice to have the cover of the parking ramp.
  • It seems to be working! Especially with the green space for music and special events.
  • Signs on College at entrance to garage.
  • Awesome - perfect right by the co-op
  • Love the Chancy Swan Park music!
  • Nice to be adjacent to the park & the creek.
  • good
  • Riverfront crossing better

Suggestions for Parking

  • I'd suggest more bike racks, especially on the park side of the ramp. Definitely no more car parking!
  • We find it very easy to park. We come early.
  • it's frustrating to have to fill meters for attending a farmers market, but is understood, as there is no way to monitor that once the market is over...
  • Maybe the Farmers Market customers should not be able to park in the recreation center parking lot, since it causes a lot of problems getting in and out of that parking lot and also prevents residents from a space to use the recreation center. Also, maybe the vendors should only start setting up their locations at 5:15 or so.
  • Not much available
  • We usually deal with parking by going early, but sometimes it is crowded.
  • From 7 AM to noon, parking in the ramp should be free.
  • The city needs to lighten up on their ticketing on Saturday morning. I have not gotten a ticket, because I am there before 8:00. However, I have heard from others who have and getting that ticket puts a very negative light on things. It seems to me that if the city wants to encourage people to attend the Farmer's Market, there should be some leninecy on parking. A lot of people are there and parking is not easy to find in that area. The Farmer's Market has a lot of appeal to people and the city can and should use this to show that IC is a friendly place.
  • Fire the meter reader that HEAVILY scours the area for poor souls whose meters run out by 5 seconds!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Maybe free parking in the city ramps, if the FM is in the Ped Mall
  • You should not charge for parking in upper ramp during market, if you really want to promote it.
  • I walk to the market, a mile from my home.
  • Don't enforce parking in adjacent ramp or lots. Let people relax and not worry about tickets - spend some time downtown perhaps.
  • Meters should be free during the market hours.
  • It is great having the parking right there in the garage.
  • Allow people to park in the municipal center lot across the street from New Pioneer on Saturday morning. You could encourage people to attend the Saturday morning Farmer's Market by making the parking free.
  • Always afraid city will ticket within their own lot.
  • however it is very easy to bike to also. This is a very good place in case it rains too.
  • Free ramp parking for farmer's market customers
  • Free parking is very limited and hard to find.
  • If we move downtown, would it be possible to offer free ramp parking from 7 - 1pm?
  • The prking on Saturday`s is none existent--you need to do something
  • See above
  • offer free parking on Saturdays
  • would give up convenient parking for better venue
  • It is challenging on WEd nights and I feel bad for people with classes at the rec center. Encouraging bbiking, walking or bsing to the market. maybe give prize of market t-shirt to encourage it.
  • Would like a venue where parking fees are not charged.
  • all other stores have free parking, how about the market?
  • When I go, I go early so this has never been an issue.
  • Parking in the Rec Center lot should be FREE during the hours the Market is open. With so many people coming and going, it is ridiculous to have "meter maids" checking to see if someone is 2 minutes late. It's in direct contradiction to the spirit of the Martket
  • Free parking in the Ramps, especially if the FM is in the Ped Mall!!
  • Free parking in the Ramps, especially if the FM is in the Ped Mall!!
  • I have always been able to find a parkin place.
  • Parking is fine. I know some people will complain, but there are always spots and 60 cents is a managable amount to pay for parking
  • It would be nice if IC would allow 15-30 minutes without having to plug the meter on Saturday mornings
  • Years ago, I would not go to the FM b/c of the parking. But now, it doesn't really bother me. If we arrive early, we try the blue lot. If not, we hit the streets. The small lot, that used to be the bus station on Gilbert, is a nice overflow lot. Plus, with the newer lots around town, there are plenty of options.
  • Perhaps encouraging people that it is ok to use the lots next to city hall and maybe some signs stating that policy.
  • Please don't enforce parking during this time. People should be able to relax and not worry about a ticket. They could stay longer and shop downtown then.
  • I can't believe they ticket people for parking on the right side of the entrance lot....
It is so nice the vendors are in a covered area, but the challenge to find parking sometimes prevents me from going....
  • It's hard to tell where to park.
  • not much you can do at the present location.
  • You not only can hardly find parking it gets very congested trying to get around to find a spot.
  • A bike rack would be nice (although it might look a little funny in front of a parking ramp).
  • Actually, the problem is not really the parking but the people who obviously perceive it as one and park illegally week after week without regard for others. They should be fined.
  • You want people to come and then you make sure that the ticket people are there as well.Parking should be free at the rec center up to a half hour after the market closes
  • there just are not enough parking slots
  • See above..........
  • hard to find parking nearby sometimes
  • Nice to have ramp for off street parking and easy axcess.
  • Tough to find a parking space on a crowded Saturday morning
  • I appreciate being able to park in the Civic Center lot on market Saturdays. I hope that will continue regardless of where the market is held.
  • We might have to drive around the block once, but really never are bothered by that. Actually, we feel its kind of the experience, contributes to the excitement of getting there before all the good stuff is gone :-)
  • The market takes up parking spaces. We have to park quite far away.
  • I don't think you should have to pay the meter in the parking lot at the rec center.
  • The parking should be free.
  • People backing their cars out of parking places when others are coming in can be a challenge.
  • If only there were fewer cars...
  • Parking is adequate as long as the lot by city hall is also available.
  • But would like parking fees forgiven Saturday AMs. This is the legend some believe. I think the policy may be lax enforcement.
  • But would like parking fees forgiven Saturday AMs. This is the legend some believe. I think the policy may be lax enforcement.
  • I have a parking permit for that ramp, so my car is already there. Easy for me . . . and my husband as well.
  • one thing is that the vendors just park and unload in the middle of the driving area on the east side of the ramp making ALL traffic wait until they are done. This NEEDs to be addressed
  • The enforcement signs at city hall lots (across from the Market) indicate no parking there on Saturdays. Why not? The lot is virtually empty on the north side.
  • It would be nice if there were better signs alerting people to the free parking in the city lot.
  • Traffic is a bit messy. Especially around the rec center. To many things have the same start thing at night.
  • It would be nice to park for free in the same ramp as the market.
  • like that the city allows free parking in their parking lot that morning
  • see above
  • The only downfall is the parking. Not the lack of, which will always be an issue downtown. Rather, the issue of people not paying attention to the direction they are supposed to drive. Clearer signage of the Enter/Exit flow would help avoid near-accidents I witnessed in the lot.
  • MOST PATRONS NEED 30 MIN OR LESS.. SHORT TERM METERS WOULD BE NICE
  • o.k.
  • The lot near by the civic center being open to the public during market hours is very helpful but free parking during market hours should be expanded to the rec center lot.
  • Parking should be free for the hours the Farmers Market is open.
  • There seems to be enough parking, but the problem concerns getting in and out of the Rec Center lot. Signs should be put up directing the traffic flow...because some people drive like idiots trying to navigate that lot. Talking on cell phones while trying to park/back up doesn't help either.
  • There seems to be enough parking, but the problem concerns getting in and out of the Rec Center lot. Signs should be put up directing the traffic flow...because some people drive like idiots trying to navigate that lot. Talking on cell phones while trying to park/back up doesn't help either.
  • The location provides for parking and its walking distance for many.
  • We ride our bikes when we are not buying big loads. Parking is at premium due the mid morning hours and we know that so we try to go early on Sat.
  • parking is hard at the downtown ramp
  • Make a bike rack available somewhere other than the Co-op.
  • more handicap parking
  • I aprk in the ramp - no problem! I'm sure others disagree with me.
  • Could parking be complementary for 2 hours on Saturday?
  • Free parking would be nice
  • Parking is always a challenge but it's ok
  • I do not think you can make improvements at this location but it is very hard to carry heavy loads to your car if you park in the ramp.
  • i'm very thankful that the city relaxes their parking policy (no citations written) during market hours. is this something that should be advertised?
  • tough on saturdays
  • advertise that parking is available for free at the north City Hall lot. There used to be signs posted, but they disappeared.
  • A downtown market would make use of parking ramps.
  • It's in a parking structure and I have NEVER had a problem finding a parking spot, even on game days.
  • it is discouraging to see lined up cars on the edge of the parking area by the rec center and then to park along there an get a ticket. I suggest "Farmers Market Only Free Parking on Sat. am.
  • I have been unhappy with the parking meter people giving tickets during the farmers market on Sat. morning. I can understand giving tickets after a certain time, but I think there should be a period of time when they aren't given in the rec parking area. I think it is reasonable to have free parking until about 8:30. Last year tickets were given right at 8 and people were ticketed for parking on the side by the creek. This was never done in the past.
  • It needs to be clearer whether or not market participants may park in the city lot across from the coop. The sign says parking is restricted on Saturdays.
  • No one likes to walk long distances, but there are enough parking spaces available within walking distance of the current Market location.
  • Make Van Buren block parking free Saturday morning
  • I have never had a problem parking.
  • Certainly there is no other place that would have more parking. Sometimes one's timing is poor to get quick parking. So what?
  • parking is difficult...don't know how changes would be made.
  • I know others have cited parking as a concern, but I have had no problems. I guess it would be nice if the ramp didn't charge for parking, but I am not familiar with their policies
  • No parking tickets during market hours. The ill will isn't worth the little revenue gained. People would be more likely to hang around and shop down when stores open if they weren't in a rush to avoid a ticket.
  • free metered parking during those hours would be nice
  • It would be nice to have a ramp close designated and with parking validation.
  • you make it, no meters on sat.
  • i typically walk down but it would be nice if the whole area were more pedestrian friendly. if the street were closed off and all traffic and parking took place on college street that would make for a more relaxed atmosphere.
  • Perfect. As I said, I've NEVER had to struggle for parking; it's always easy to find, and either free or inexpensive.
  • In conjunction with an open air location, good parking would be a plus.......
  • I usually bike or walk. On occasions when I drive I can usually find a spot within a block from the market.
  • rec center lot fills quickly. Several times I could find no place to park so did not go. And saw lots of tickets issued for those parked in the grass along the edge of the lot
  • Wed evening parking is free -- nice benefit!
  • the move could be made for smaller, satellite markets, to encourage walkers/bikers and easier access, rather than push for parking. unless the ramp could be made taller....
  • We walk to the market, so we cannot say anything about the parking situation.
  • there is not enough parking available for the market in its current location
  • Parking is a real issue. especially when they roam around and pass out tickets while you are shopping. Maybe a better location for the market would expand the parking and the vendors. Most of the vendors there are wonderful but a little more and with some variety would be wonderful! I understand "newbies" cannot get a space because they are taken from year to year...it is time to expand
  • city should not ticket during farmer market, or at least give people 1/2 hour before ticketing
  • Iowa City should have free parking on Saturdays. It would be so much more hospitable--and improve everyone's attitude!!!
  • I think there is plenty of parking upstairs, but too many cars want to park behind the civic center and that creates problems. They should just go into the lot--it works fine.
  • City should make whole city hall lot avilable for Saturday market
  • Free parking would probably attract more visitors
  • Parking for customers should be unambiguously free, perhaps with some system of proof of purchase.
  • the free parking in the lot nearby is very helpful
  • I don't drive to the market.
  • There was plenty of parking
  • Great, with facilities for both bikes and cars nearby.
  • There's plenty.
  • Make parking free during the Farmer's Market in the Rec Center Parking lot.
  • It seems wrong to have meter police ticketing cars here. This market is good for the city and the ticketing, I think, is counterproductive. Let it go. It breeds ill will and just seems snarky to ticket someone for barely missing the alotted time.
  • It's great to walk and bike to in nice weather. But it's ironic that the vendors get all the good parking places being as it's in a parking ramp!
  • It is always difficult to find a parking spot by the rec center on Saturdays. I don't know how to remedy this problem.
  • Eastside has ample parking, downtown needs improvement.
  • Great Parking
  • Dangerous at times. Better to park at the City Hall.
  • Meters should be free during market hours to encourage use or else please post a sign at each burlington parking lane entrance - Note: Meters enforced during martket hours posted there is some misconception that they are not enforced.
  • I ride my bike.
  • It would be nice if parking is free during market hours
  • Abundant parking
  • Parking is only an issue during the Rummage in the Ramp otherwise it is uaually easy to find a spot in a block or two.
  • Where to park and the city gives tickets on saturday at meters in the rec center pk lot.
  • Try to get more people to ride the bus to the market to help with the market.
  • No problem with parking
  • free parking in ramp
  • Walking is good!
  • This is a tough one - esp on Sat am
  • over
  • sometimes it was a problem but never a problem
  • I ride a bike
  • Free to attendees?
  • A perfect place for a fender bender
  • There are always spaces in the upper levels of the ramp.
  • I think it best to encourage walking or biking to the market. The less opportunity to park the better.
  • customers need to know they can park up stairs
  • It is hard to carry the groceries back to the car. Maybe you could have a drive up service? People could leave their purchases with an attendant, go get their car and then drive by to pick their grocieries up, like at Hy-Vee
  • a shuttle
  • Free parking in the rec center lot would be nice, but is probably unrealistic.
  • How about free parking on Sat. AM in the ramp over head.
  • A few times we have walked just to avoid the parking problem, but that limits what we can buy and carry home.
  • Since I walk, don't know about parking, but hope it is free on Saturday mornings.
  • I really appreciate that we can park in the Lot by the police station.
  • It's in a parking house - what more would cardependent people want? bus stop not exactly near by, thats the question you should ask in 2009.
  • Waive parking fee in ramp on Saturday mornings during Farmer's Market.
  • I ride my bike!!! Yea!!!
  • Consider offering free street parking for the Farmer's Market. Again, in Des Moines they have free parking, and their Farmer's Market was packed!
  • Parking in the ramp should be free during market hours on Saturday.
  • Parking is nonexistent in the area. You can easily walk 1/2 mile or more from the only available spots.
  • reduced or free parking at meters
  • Plenty of spaces close by.
  • I don't think there ARE viable parking improvement options for the downtown market except to make the police lot free during the market.
  • we always walked there
  • There is very limited parking near the Chauncy Swan ramp, and this is a key factor that keeps me from attending the market more often.
  • Is there still free parking in the city hall lot? No signs this past year.
  • Now that one may park behind the Fire Dept./Unitarian Church w/o being ticketed.
  • More bike parking!
  • It is kind of hard to park but I can't imagine where you could add parking space. I'm usually able to park upstairs in the garage where the market is.
  • I did not think the parking was as bad this year.
  • I usually ride my bike to the farmers market and the parking is adequate but could be expanded. For the duration of the farmers market, the city should provide free parking at normally metered spots.
  • It's downtown. Parking is a problem. Go figure. We walk or bike.
  • parking is obviously more difficult when the University is in session and the later in the day you attend the market
  • Due to the size of the crowd, it would be really nice if the meters at the Rec Center were free on Saturdays during the Farmers Market. Most people don't seem to realize that they aren't and get very mad when they get a ticket.
  • Parking should be available very close by, and convenient to access. I don't want to carry my heavy bags very far to get to my car
  • how about free parking during the Farmers Mkt times? Getting a ticket is a disincentive to go.
  • advertise that you can park for free at city hall
  • why do we have to pay for parking when we are shopping locally, building community, and supporting the city's programs?
  • It's IC/it's parking - what more can be said!!
  • I walk there! :)
  • Challenging on Wed Evening.
  • nice
  • More free shuttles

Suggestions for Cleanliness

  • I do not like the ramp
  • There are no trash bins in the market site of Chauncey Swan. Trash/recycle/compost bins would be helpful.
  • It seems gross in the parking ramp with the car oil and the bird poop all over.
  • Generally clean
  • As noted above, the ramp stinks and has sticky oily gross spots all around.
  • Most vendors are very clean but a few more trash cans for folks who finish eating food might be useful
  • I've never noticed anything out of the ordinary. Yes, it becomes a bit wet when it's raining, but you can't help that.
  • More frequent powercleaning of ramp would be helpful.
  • more trash containers would be helpful
  • Not sure if this is a rule or request, yet I like that not many people bring their dogs. Food, kids, close quarters, and dogs just don't mix.
  • Getting it out of a parking garage would help with the appearance of cleanliness.
  • The sidewalk along the ramp that borders Chauncey Swan park often has alot of pigeon droppings on it. It grosses me out.
  • could use some sanitary hand wash stations
  • I'm a picky person and very visual. I have never noticed anything that bothered me, or for that matter, even caught my eye
  • The parking garage and, especially the stairwells, need to be kept cleaner. Most people would shy away from buying food that they are going to eat in a place that is not kept clean. Remember the old saying "never buy food out of someones trunk or garage."
  • Again the parking garage doesn't seem like the cleanest place.
  • It would be nice to have a certain amount of time for fee parking on market Saturdays.
  • Some vendors appeared as if they didn't care how they looked, or their own cleanliness. Since its type of a business setting, cleanliness is what I suggest to improve.
  • The sign that dogs are not allowed in the ramp is not enough to stop people from bringing them. It needs to be strictly enforced.
  • But I can never find a wastebasket and end up with spring roll wrappers in my pockets. Add a couple of trash cans maybe.
  • But I can never find a wastebasket and end up with spring roll wrappers in my pockets. Add a couple of trash cans maybe.
  • I always thought it was clean and easy to find the vendors. I wish there was more room in the middle of the aisles. Too crowded
  • Perhaps some hand sanitizing wipes at various locations throughtout the market. Multiple people handling the produce and other goods can't be very sanitary.
  • Perhaps some hand sanitizing wipes at various locations throughtout the market. Multiple people handling the produce and other goods can't be very sanitary.
  • I never noticed a problem, unless you are referring to after market.
  • It does not seem dirty.
  • Good
  • It's a parking ramp, so not a particularly clean place
  • I've not noticed exceptional dirtiness.
  • add some banners around the parking ramp to liven it up a bit during the market.
  • Can more trash bins be placed throughout the farmers market area? I find myself holding onto wrappers, toothpicks, etc after I try samples.
  • In the current location I do not know what more you could do. It is outside and the wind and elements play into how clean you can keep it.
  • could be cleaner
  • There are too many extraneous items that I think the vendors could be neater about in order to create more space for customers to walk.
  • Seems clean and well organized. In the peak of the season, it is very congested and it would be nice if the vendors could spread out a little more.
  • More power washing of ramp, esp. as season progresses.
  • cars and trucks park in the ramps. there are associated smells, leaks, etc.
  • interesting. I've never noticed a problem. Do some people think there is? I count on the CITY to maintain the cleanliness.
  • Seems pretty clean to me. Would be nice if there were recycle bins.
  • More trash cans
  • parking ramp is dark and often dirty
  • The mountains of bird poop are a little gross. :-{
  • I have never observed a problem.
  • smoking should be prohibited and enforced
  • hard to have it feel clean in a ramp
  • trash bins were often overflowing
  • The parking ramp is dirty and dark.
  • The parking garage isn't dirty, for a parking garage. But there is something pretty disagreeable about huddling underground with cars to buy local fresh produce.
  • It's remarkably clean and neat as it is.
  • I always thought it was perfectly fine.
  • Never really thought about it.
  • Good
  • Area is clean.
  • Hard to keep a parking ramp clean.
  • Cleanliness is satisfactory
  • City should close ramp at 3:00 AM for
Saturday, tow cars and sweep and pick up all trash.
  • Very clean.
  • the parking ramp is a bit dark and the parking stains & bird poop are more noticible than in an open air market
  • Possibly more garbage and recycling containers
  • Who worries about this? I think it's fine.
  • The ramp and park area are generally well kept, but evidence of the alcohol/binge drink culture is evident on Saturday mornings. Make the binge bar owners pay their fair share...
  • even though posted no dogs. We usually saw one or two.
  • even though posted no dogs. We usually saw one or two.
  • It is a parking ramp...
  • good

Suggestions for Vendor Courtesy

  • I have my favorites, but, in general, I find all the vendors to be quite pleasant and knowledgeable.
  • The vendors seem to get mad at individuals that are in the parking spaces even before the 5 pm time.
  • I have been going to the Farmer's Market for a very long time. Some vendors have great personalities and other's don't. Those who are friendly will reap the benefits because they create their customer base. Those who aren't friendly will not do well at the market.
  • they are fantastic.
  • Nice
  • Vendors are very informative and helpful.
  • All of the vendors are very friendly and helpful.
  • Vendors need to act more professional and be aware that their interactions among themselves are overheard and seen by potential customers.
  • The vendors are what makes the markets
  • Invite more vendors
  • I have always enjoyed chatting with the vendors; it is one of my favorite aspects of the market.
  • Great vendors!
  • The vendors are all friendly and courteous.
  • Everybody has been very nice and professional.
  • Everyone is happy to be there.
  • Some of these people can be rather rude and thinking only of themselves some have never heard the customer is always right!
  • Most vendors are polite and courteous but on a few occassions I overheard individual vendors making racist and homophobic remarks. This should somehow be addressed.
  • I have heard minor complaints over the years but apparently I only shop where the vendors are pleasant and helpful.
  • All the vendors I have dealt with are helpful & friendly. The last Saturday, they all wished me well & said thanks for my patronage. That is more than I get sometimes at local stores!
  • The vendors are ALWAYS friendly and look for their weekly customers. Very welcoming and helpful even if you have never been their customer!! Vendors are always willing to bring something in for the next week or go out of their way to help you find something you're looking at ANOTHER booth if they don't have what you need. Pauline Greazeal should be named QUEEN of HOSPITALITY. On the other side, admittedly, on cold days there are a couple of folks who just sit and stare at space, but then there is no one at their booth. Which is cause, which effect??
  • Some of the vendors can be quite rude at times. These are the ones that are clearly interested in just making as many sales as possible and not focused on being a friendly, neighborhood market.
  • For the most part, most vendors are enjoyable. Some seem short-tempered or do not care to answer questions about their products.
  • A delightful bunch of people.
  • Never a problem. Customers block the aisles some but they are happily visiting friends.
  • Never a problem. Customers block the aisles some but they are happily visiting friends.
  • Vendors are friendly and helpful.
  • I find all vendors friendly and willing to help with information and size of purchase.
  • These people are extreamly rude if you are parked on that side of the ramp even around 4:50pm.
  • Everyone seems very cordial and nobody "bugs" you.
  • One vendor made a comment to me that I considered offensive comment about another ethnic group (this was not directed at me, it was made as though I might be of the same opinion) I no longer patronize that vendor. Otherwise I am very impressed by the friendliness & helpfulness of vendors. There's a great atmosphere generally.
  • Always friendly and helpful vendors.
  • They are WONDERFUL!
  • They are WONDERFUL!
  • Some vendors have been rude about starting time.
  • All the vendors are great
  • Most are super nice, but occasionally there will be someone who doesn't act like they really want to be there.
  • Great
  • All have been friendly and courteous.
  • Vendors have been great.
  • The vendors are great and always congenial
  • The vendors are great!
  • people are relatively nice and polite, some especially so. most are willing to engage in conversation about their products/growing seasons, etc.
  • The vendors are wonderful. They are typically very friendly and helpful.
  • I have found all the vendors to be extremely helpful and courteous. I really enjoy shopping at the market. There is only vendor who is very religious who tries to talk to customers about religious, which is very annoying. But other than that, I've had very positive experiences.
  • All vendors seem polite to me.
  • I have never encountered a less than courteous vendor.
  • Do not like when vendors try to lure me in to purchase something, and then act rudely to me when I choose not to purchase anything.
  • The vendors have always been pleasant and helpful to me.
  • for the most part the vendors are very nice, if they are not we just don't patronize them - that's the free market at work
  • It's always been a joy.
  • Everyone is very nice....
  • I have no complaints. Everyone seems nice to me.
  • most are very helpful, full of information about their products Nice that they usually remember their "regular" customers, even after the winter break
  • i have had no ill communication with any vendor.
  • Most are very friendly and courteous, and I doubt there is much you can do about the curmudgeons or people who are having a bad day.
  • Usually wonderful people!
  • I have never found a vendor to lack courtesy. Some shoppers--yes. They get impatient with the crowds and pushy and short-tempered.
  • All we have contacted are both friendly and helpful, even if one only has a question about the product being sold.
  • I've never interacted with a vendor who has been anything other than friendly, courteous, and helpful.
  • The meat guy is obnoxious. I really really do not like him and think he is often rude. I bought something from him twice. Once he made a crude joke (about steak inducing good sex) and once he insulted me for asking about flank steak. I will never buy from him again.
  • All the vendors that I've dealt with have been friendly and helpful.
  • Vendors are great!
  • Good
  • Very friendly
  • Vendors are always polite.
  • People differ - thats ok no body is really rude.
  • excellent
  • Some are very rude!
  • I became friends with some
  • all were polite
  • Rude people
  • Excellent!
  • Maybe have all of certain produce in the same area.
  • Everyone's great!
  • how could you (The Iowa City Parks & Recreation Department) dictate that? somewhat ridiculous.
  • Everyone is friendly and helpful.
  • All vendors I have dealt with were very polite.
  • love the vendors
  • Everyone is friendly and helpful
  • All the vendors are wonderful!
  • Everyone is very nice.
  • Vendors are if anything too reserved and don't engage the public enough.

    accommodate the people
  • I think the vendors do a great job trying to
    accommodate the people
  • They were all very cordial!
  • wonderful vendors
  • excellent

Suggestions for Product Variety

  • Would like to see more eggs. I just don't understand about the pork prices. Follow me here: If the h1ni formally called Swine Flu has caused the pork market to lose. Why in the world are the prices for pork, bacon etc so darn hi? Seems to us they should LOWER the prices to move them. Ah yes processed venison would be great.
  • I really appreciate that we're able to get meat and vegetables. I've enjoyed the wool and other craft vendors as well.
  • It would be nice to see more fruits
  • More meat. Less clothing and locally made soap, etc. More food.
  • There seems to be a nice variety.
  • Lots of the same products from vendor to vendor. Plenty of baked goods. Could use some dairy: eggs, milk, butter, etc.
  • sometimes a lot of the vendors have the same thing. Would love to see a vendor of just greens-arugula, mustard greens, different lettuces, etc
  • More vendors would allow for more product variety.
  • I feel a larger space would give more vendors a chance to be included.
  • The more the better.
  • Would like to see more vendors
  • Great
  • More organic produce would be nice.
  • More produce
  • Would enjoy more ready-to-eat items, especially since Iowa City downtown is a culinary paradise.
  • More unusual vegetables, please, if possible. No one grows lima beans. They should try to educate the public to try different vegetables.
  • Milk and cheeses (Farmer's Creamery) would be a good addition.
  • Less jewelry and knick knack vendors.
  • More vendors selling fruits and meats.
  • More organic products - dairy would be great. Too many cakes and muffin sellers, we need dairy and fruit sellers.
  • Variety continues to improve
  • See above!!
  • cheese
  • I think foods are more important than handcrafts.
  • i would like to see more dairy vendors - eggs, milk, cheeses, etc
  • I am impressed every time, but I would still love for there to be more vendors, especially artisans.
  • considering the vagaries of Iowa weather, that product variety is usually exceptional
  • Suggest having food vendors, entertainment, crafts,.....make it a social event in addition to the typical farmers market produce
  • Always could have more
  • great
  • great
  • New vendors are welcome, but the current vendors offer plenty of variety.
  • Need more organics!
  • It's interesting that all the produce vendors sell the exact same thing. Is that b/c it's what is in season, or is it b/c they are growing the same thing out of competition. At the Des Moines Farmers Market, they have all these wonderful food stands (ie The famous Breakfast Burrito stand, where the line goes down the block, Indian, Chinese, etc.) I saw a few stands here, but it seemed like it didn't have the draw that the ones in DSM had...
  • It seems to me that the market is becoming quite the craft show. I can see having some crafts and I'm more interested in food!
  • Growers should have priority and never be turned away in favor of some business that uses the market to sell things they "make". I think that is why it is called a "farmers market".
  • Different types of vegetables would be nice. Everyone seems to grow the same thing. Vendors could have more samples and recipes to entice people to try new vegetables.
  • A good coffee vendor would be awesome
  • There are a lot of interesting specialty vendors but I'd like to encourage fresh food vendors more.
  • More variety is always a plus. Especially since it is all regional products.
  • Berries! We need more berries! Aronias would be great.
  • when I would go often there would be alot of the same type of items in regards to premade items
  • would love to see more ready-to-eat/cooked food to go. maybe you could invite local restaurants to sign up for 1 market event, selling something from their menu that would introduce people to their business.
  • I think we have a great variety of wares.
  • It would be great to have more variety.
  • Wish more vendors had heirloom variety of vegetables. Maybe they're there and I just haven't discovered. Perhaps more could be done to advertise the heirlooms.
  • We have our own local business that sells bird houses. We cannot sell at the market because we did not personally construct the birdhouses. I've seen several vendors who sell items at the market that do not make it themselves. Either let any legitimate business sell ... or enforce the rules.
  • would love to have some local cheesemakers, although I personally don't know of any.
  • I would say between Some Improvement and Considerable Improvement is needed. There are many of the same vegetables there. A little more variety in products or homemade products are appreciated. Different baked goods are fun to try.
  • I would like to see a larger area and more vendors.
  • This has improved considerably in last year or so.
  • I was impressed with the diversity of products at the Madison Wisc. market. Seemed to have more varietys of vegetables (as well as apples and cheese typical of Wisconsin.)
  • I was impressed with the diversity of products at the Madison Wisc. market. Seemed to have more varietys of vegetables (as well as apples and cheese typical of Wisconsin.)
  • Why not sell coffee and soft drinks
  • I think the products offered are great!
  • I would like garden produce only. NO CRAFTS
  • I would like to see more variety and selection of meats. It would be very nice to have a "meat section" where vendors selling various kinds of meats could be located - a cluster.
  • Would like to see more local dairy foods offered.
  • I think the variety of products at the market is great and more about be even better.
  • The variety has expanded. Keep the variety but also the focus on locally produced food.
  • The variety has just exploded in recent years!
  • THe Des Moines Farmers' Market is a great model. They offer food, jewelry, clothing, candles, live music----a ton of diversity should be your goal.
  • I have no concrete suggestions but I'm sure there are always new veggies, crafts etc. I wouldn't want the ratio to crafts to produce/food to get any greater than it is now.
  • Not sure about the amount of non-food vendors. Some weeks it seemed that the vendors on the East side of the parking ramp were not selling much because their items were not "farmer" or nature related. i.e. stationery, jewelry
  • An even greater selection of herbs and spices would be great!
  • An even greater selection of herbs and spices would be great!
  • The product variety seems to increase every year.
  • love the home baked items
  • There is room for improvement
  • I'd prefer to see food and produce vendors separated from "craft" vendors.
  • add more vendors to buy food onsite...the breakfast burritos were great
  • I enjoy the plants, fruits and vegetables and baked goods. Sometimes the crafts get a little out of hand.
  • The market has a great variety of food and art/craft.
  • How could the city increase variety?
  • More organic produce, please. I only buy organic.
  • fewer crafts, stick to the food
  • It would be neat to have info about CSAs...maybe there is and I missed it?!
  • Are there cheese or dairy vendors that could see? I would love to buy local cheese.
  • more dairy and meat vendors. the vegetable vendors are great, but i'd like to be able to purchase milk, cheese, and meats too. (i know there are a couple meat vendors, but more would be welcome)
  • keep adding stalls ... love the variety
  • I'd like to see more meat vendors (someone selling veal would be especially welcome).
  • keep up the fresh produce
  • see additional vendor
  • I would have appreciated seeing some organic apples. The apples at the market were beautiful, but every vendor used at least some sprays. I would have also like to see organic cauliflower (or at least no-spray cauliflower). The Madison, WI market has lots of local cheese. I would also like to see more local cheese at our market if possible.

It seems like the chicken vendors frequetly run out of whole chickens. I would like to see them carry more chickens. Since they are frozen, I wouldn't think this would be hugely difficult.

I know we have a Mexican vendor and an egg roll vendor. It might be nice if some of the other local ethnic vendors sold at the market.
  • I would like to see more hot food vendors.
  • Less crafts more food
  • I like that the market focuses on food. I'm not interested in arts, crafts and smelly candles.
  • more food - less crafts
  • More produce vendors
  • I see little reason to sell handmade items like soaps and jewelry when space is limited; I'd keep it to food products, preferably organically grown.
  • I could do with fewer craft items, but then I don't have to buy them!
  • It continues to improve in types of products sold.
  • I might suggest fewer baked goods and more variety in fresh produce. The prepared vendor food out front--the hamburgers, brats, etc is of pretty average quality.
  • more herbs
  • More produce and less baked goods.
  • More less-familiar vegetables and fruits. Everyone seems to grow the same things. More things such as wine and cheese.
  • Do not like all the crafty things - cards, jewelry, etc.....takes away from the market and makes it feel like a craft show.
  • I don't know if the vendors would like this or not but something to consider is putting non-food items separate from food items, cooked food separate from non-cooked food (a food-court-like area with tables might help sales and invite other food vendors...?)
  • It is always nice to have even more variety than is presently supplied.
  • tho I think there is to much ready to eat food. I have never bought any food to eat and probably never will. health reasons, them not me
  • more fruit
  • It is always great to have more fresh food selection. More cheeses would be nice.
  • More artisans needed and prepared food vendors.
  • great for any local foods!!
  • dairy sorely needed. earlier produce, too, though i dont know how you convince farmers that it could be done...encouragement for extending the season on both sides, and encouragement of more than just staples, which would also be good for the farmer.
  • More arts and crafts would be great.
  • More handmade items.
More clothing - maybe t-shirts and sweatshirts.
  • At other markets I attend, there are vendors who offer coffee and sweet rolls, fresh-sqeezed juice, and other items that cause folks to stay around for a while and greet neighbors. Except on Wednesdays, there is no place or incentive to do that in this otherwise friendly community.
  • I would live to see a vendor selling locally-made cheese.
  • Some non-food vendors are okay, but I would rather see fewer such vendors and more local produce, especially produce vendors using organic methods (even if not officially certified).
  • Would like to see more food to eat items
  • I'm sure there's a good reason for the restriction, but it would be nice to see some produce from outside the US available for purchase.
  • I prefer it to remain mostly food. I have not liked having so much non-food, so lets not expand it more, or, if we do, lets at least put all the food together . . .
  • I think the market should always be on the lookout for greater product variety. Especially of locally grown/produced foods. I sometimes think the market has more trinkets etc. than necessary, but that is my bias.
  • There should be a dairy vendor.
  • it would be lovely to have more ethnic veggies
  • There are too many vendors that are only selling bakery products. Remove those vendors that are only selling bakery products and not also selling vegetables and fruits
  • The range of products and produce is very good - if there are vendors with more ideas, they should be welcomed, but we aren't lacking in variety as things are now.
  • I think it is great. I love to look at the different stuff. I do think it should be heavily weighted toward FARMer's market products, though, and not turn it into a craft show. Some craft vendors are okay, but it should be about food and garden, mostly.
  • Less baked stuff like cookies and stuff.
  • Would like more grass-fed meat vendors.
  • Encourage more variety. Numerous vendors had the same items.
  • would be nice to have more food variety
  • Need more vendors - More Organic
  • A wide range of products.
  • I want Kuri and Kobacka Squash!
  • Need more local vendors. The more you have the more people come.
  • very good
  • More unusual vegetables
  • very good
  • More:wednesday
  • More veg/fruit cariety
  • Hot breakfast food on Saturday morning
  • I would like more meat sellers, especially someone with organic, free range chicken and grass fed beef. Does anyone supply dairy? I can't remember. Dairy and locally made cheeses would be nice. Also locally made wines and beers, if that is legal. It might be nice to have a large draw of artists, maybe once a month, for example on the first saturday of each month.
  • I would like to see more fruit and berries available for sale.
  • Need things we actually want to eat such as sweet corn, fruit, broccoli, rhubarb, onions.
  • Appreciate all the variety that is offered.
  • Vendors have little imagination in decideding what to graw. How about trying some new varities? There are new ones every year and most growers all grow the some thing. Kohlrabi? Give me a break!
  • Nice diversity.
  • I think there arent enough true fruit/veggie stands, eggs and cheese and meats/ sausages.
  • Already excellent!
  • You really should crack down on vendors who bring in produce they didn't grow, such as the Prochaskas who always bring in boxes of Dole broccoli and cauliflower every year.
  • It's not always possible to find everything I'm looking for, even when it's in season. I'm sure the New Pioneer Co-op loves the fact that you always have to supplement your Farmer's Market purchases with a trip to their store.
  • More organic options would be great. Most vendors are not organic. Sometimes they say they're "spray-free," but I don't know whether to believe them, or whether that is the same as pesticide-free.
  • would like more meals/food items ready eat
  • There is a great variety, but I don't want to see variety expand at the cost of reducing the number of produce vendors. Produce should always be the dominant sector among vendors, in my view.
  • It would be great to have a vendor who supplied healthy baked goods. The ones now are a little high on the sugar side.
  • less crafts
  • there is room to expand!
  • Wish they were offering a greater variety of sweet corn instead of solely the high-sugar type.
  • I like the variety of products that is showing up on Saturdays.
  • I would like the non produce items to be kept separate
  • Would like to see expanded vendor sales and CSA offerings to include more eggs, dairy and local poultry, meat, cheese, etc.
  • I'd like to see more craft/artist booths on Wednesdays. There's quite a few on Saturday but I don't make it down for that very often.
  • There is currently a great diversity of products. I wouldn't mind seeing even more variety in produce. I do think the products should be made or grown in Iowa only. I would like to see a rule of 2/3 of the vendors can provide food, 1/3 of the vendors can provide nonfood.
  • Would like to see more hand-made soaps and cleaning products.
  • I'd have liked to see more variety - particularly of meats and cheeses available. It often seemed that every vendor was selling more or less the same thing.
  • Love the wide range of locally produced items I can find there.
  • Good variety - I typically buy tomatoes, salsa, cookies, catnip, and meat - all from different vendors.
  • would like more organic and free-range meat options but the variety is quite good.
  • I think the more you can offer the better.
  • Depends...Time of year - nothing the city can easily do to make changes!
  • I love it!
  • more grab and go
  • Greenhouse grown wild flowers

Suggestions for Product Quality

  • Excellent quality! Much better than store-bought.
  • Maybe a option to bring our own containers that way they the farmers do not have to pay for them & we can help the land fill.
  • I've been very satisfied with the products that I have purchased.
  • Very good
  • Excellent quality
  • I have my favorite vendors but most are great.
  • See above comment.
  • Most often very fresh
  • quality of produce varied from great to mediocre -- not sure there's much one can do about this, however.
  • Excellent
  • Excellent
  • the quality is satisfactory to excellent.
  • see above
  • Seemed quite good to me.
  • Some items are not the freshest including the baked goods I have had them mold by the next day.
  • many produce products are just too dirty
  • I think some of the craft items that are offered get a bit much sometime, but have no problem with them as long as they don't take up spaces of people who sell food.
  • That is weather related.
  • That is weather related.
  • We are pleased with the variety and quality!
  • GREAT
  • GREAT
  • Wide selection of quality so you can pick and choose what suits your needs.
  • Probably room for improvement. I bought a melon that was half rotten. Probably my fault for not inspecting better.
  • it wasn't home grown...came out of the same boxes as at the grocery
  • Fresh, well displayed and abundant!
  • I've been impressed with the quality of the products.
  • great to support the loal food market - The other items such as cards, clothes and other non food items (not including plants) are unecessary and clutter up the place
  • How would the city increase product quality?
  • soooo good! :)
  • good
  • I would appreciate it if all the vendors specified whether or not they use organic methods or pesticides, etc. I was pregnant this summer so it was extremely important to me and I needed to ask each vendor who did not have signs showing this information. It also helps us to make better decisision about how much to spend for each item. I'll pay more for organic apples than conventional apples.

Other than that, I thought product quality was great.
  • I trust the farmers to only sell fresh, delicious product every week. When I bought inedible corn one week, I feel that farmer should have known it was bad and not brought it to market.
  • As more farmers participate, the quality of the vegetables are better - smaller size, tastier rather than the usual "bigger is better"
  • The quality is fantastic
  • Great stuff.
  • Totally organic and totally Johnson County to start; then, if there's still space move to a lesser quality categories.
  • Guess I kind of resent people who do not grow their produce but rather buy from another source (such as Frytown market) and then resell at much inflated prices. Also, there are a few vendors who sell not so fresh produce.
  • The quality of the items I have purchased has been good in terms of fruits, vegetables and herbs. The baked goods, and the "meal" vendors is quite average overall.
  • Some of the baked goods are very mediocre. Do you ask for samples before you sell spaces?
  • I would prefer to eliminate the crafts and sell only food
  • I think in recent years a couple of commercial sort of vendors have crept in; people who make "cute" knitted stuff. I think it should be almost all handmade, handgrown food. This is not about crafts.
  • I would like to know what farmers are certified organic and which aren't. Some farmers can claim that they are organic, but they do not necessarily conduct organic farming practices. I think customers need to be aware that just because a farmer participates at the farmer's market does not automatically mean that he/she is providing organic produce. Customers also need to be aware that farmers that use the word "organic" on their signage don't necessarily provide pesticide-free produce. Some small farmers actually use a higher concentration of pesticides for bugs and weeds than commercial farmers because they don't mix the chemicals is bulk quantities. I know it's difficult for the city to monitor the vendors' farming practices, but if there was a way to bring this issue to the public's attention, I think it would put some pressure on the farmers to better comply with organic practices.
  • there is no consistence in quality through the vendors.
  • More organic produce.
  • There is a lady that sells pies there by the piece and I do not know what she put in them but it was like pieces of formed something or other ( other than the blueberry) I thought I was buying. I will NEVER go to her again :(
  • Not sure what you would do to regulate this- it is up to consumers to choose, they can usually get most types of produce from more than one vendor.
  • The best!
  • Sometimes the produce is not first-rate. Perhaps you could institute some quality control and keep produce of poor quality out.
  • As above the market should always be looking for increased quality.
  • Excellent.
  • Anything that isn't good quality won't sell - and I thin the vendors know that.
  • Love it. Love what I get there.
  • Need more "organic" vendors, need to have only people who actually grow - not who buy from the market and resell
  • Good Quality
  • Quality if fine for most vendors, a few have problems.
  • very good
  • varied sometimes from vendors but great overall
  • very good
  • some vendors have dirty produce and I just stay away from them
  • It is very rare that I have any troubles with what I buy there.
  • I think organic vs conventional merchandise needs to be made clearer. I d prefer organic only (as in St paul, MN)but then the IC market would go poof
  • It's great!
  • Everything is always good, and if you don't like one vendor's stuff you can go to another one.
  • We're so happy with our CSA and the market vendors.
  • Outstanding
  • fantastic!
  • Excellent quality with the items I buy,
  • Depends...
  • Good

Suggestions for Prices

  • My wife has noticed some items higher this year than insome of the stores.
  • Lower them always
  • Prices should be set by the vendors at a level they think is sustainable.
  • They seem reasonable. Generally prices for produce at Farmer's Markets market are lower than grocery stores. If something seems to high to me, I will compare prices at the NP Coop before I decide if I will purchase it at the market.
  • Usually the best deal in town by far!
  • I thought some prices were high this year
  • some items seemed over priced, apples/tomatoes
  • It used to seem that there were good buys to be had at markets. Now it seems that prices have jacked up considerably. Sometimes have to really hold back on what we'd like to get.
  • Always fair.
  • Seems like there is across the board agreement on standardized pricing. Seems kind of uncompetitive. Not a big complaint though - I know it is hard work to grow vegetables by hand.
  • Some items seem over priced, but I can pick and choose
  • some vendors expensive
  • most of the vendors are priced appropriately (a few are even underpriced), but some are simply too expensive -- some are even selling goods available for less a few booths away.
  • I would often go, but not buy, due to high prices. Comparable quality at a grocery store for much less price.
  • I am often surprised by the high prices I see vendors charging. I can by local produce from the grocery store at prices that often beat prices at the farmer's market.
  • Prices seem very reasonable to me.
  • Sometimes pricey
  • prices were good if the quality was high, but sometimes you'd pay the same and get so-so quality
  • very competitive
  • very competitive
  • I think the prices are reasonable and fair.
  • Would like more competition in pricing - everyone seems to charge the same.
  • I think the vendors have price fixed a little on the high end, but that's not true across the board for all products.
  • Everyone always wants a good deal. I will admit to not buying some things at market because they would be cheaper in the grocery. I don't like that and wish I could do ALL my fresh market shopping at Farmer's Market.
  • There appeared to be some price fixing of produce among the various vendors. all prices, including produce, baked products, specialty products and cooked products are exorbitantly priced. a good example is a $3.00 charge for a tiny cupcake.
  • a bit expensive soemtimes
  • great prices for fresh produce and baked goods!
  • The cost of tomatoes this year was a bit outrageous. They were cheaper at the Hy-V. Used to be that you could go to farmer's market and it would be more cost effective. That hasn't been true for a couple of years.
  • Most people think that they will get a deal by shoping at the local farmers market. When they might get a better deal in the produce section of Wal-mart. The vendors do need to consider that they should be at least competative.
  • Vendors have to make money but I noticed prices similar to HyVee. Madison seems a little cheaper. How high is our fee to the vendor?
  • Vendors have to make money but I noticed prices similar to HyVee. Madison seems a little cheaper. How high is our fee to the vendor?
  • It is definitely more expensive than the grocery stores on most things; but worth it!
  • prices are not out of line. Farming is hard work.
  • Prices seem very fair and in line with other area markets.
  • It seems a bit pricey, and I have heard prices are lower at other nearby markets.
  • I think the produce is fairly priced
  • Of course, everything could be a little cheaper for the consumer, but the vendors do a good job at keeping their prices competitive.
  • Of course, everything could be a little cheaper for the consumer, but the vendors do a good job at keeping their prices competitive.
  • Some things are pricey, while others are reasonable.
  • keep comparable or less expensive to store purchased items
  • The egg prices have been steadily climbing over the years. Many flower prices seem very reasonable. Coffee seems expensive sometimes.
  • Cheaper always sounds better, but fair pricing is the most important thing. It does seem that sometimes there is a range in prices for the same thing from vendor to vendor; however it's not always easy to compare prices till you've already spent too much.
  • prices were higher than in local groceries
  • Very reasonable.
  • Buy local.
  • Some items seem VERY high. The dollars can really add up for good, fresh, high quality items.
  • How could the city influence pricing?
  • products are sold in a free market: if they're too high, folks won't buy. if they're too low, they'll sell out quickly. it's strictly a negotiation between the buyer and seller: our dollars are like "votes" and determine what products will do well and which ones won't.
  • generally, the prices are good.
  • Farmers markets ought to be less expensive than groceries of similar quality at, for example, New Pioneer.
  • things got too high this year. Like $5 for cinnamon rolls
  • I don't really have strong opinions. I'm willing to pay a premium for fresh, local, organic food and want the farmers to have a reasonable return on their investment.
  • I noticed that the vendors who charge "fair" (or lower prices) and provide a good product were usually busy. Those with higher prices or inferior products did not do as much business (or at least their crowds were smaller). I think this issue monitors itself.
  • Vegetables are often overpriced
  • I think products are quite pricey however I am willing to pay more to have locally grown produce and have it fresh.
  • It's somewhat expensive, but these farmers deserve what they make.
  • They are not cheap, but I want to support local vendors.
  • kinda steep.
  • Prices seem fine to me.
  • I don't mind paying higher prices to get really fresh, locally grown food but some vendors are really pushing the prices.
  • Although it's nice for the customer, many of the prices are much lower than they should be. I wonder about those under-chargers undercutting the other farmers.
  • I think the vendors should charge whatever the market will bear. The customer can decide whether it's worth it.
  • Sometimes it appears that vendors have "set" their prices; that is all offer the same item for the same price.
  • Some things are well priced and others aren't really.
  • It does appear that the vendors talk to each other as everyone charges the same. I'd like to see more competition, but appreciate that the farmers need to make a living and it is hard work.
  • I think the prices really jumped this past season. they are getting to be very high and this really limited my purchases; I hesitated to buy new things
  • I know everything is more expensive. But it has seemed to me that the market used to be much less expensive than it now is.
  • Always could be lower or have some special hot buys......
  • i actually think that maintaining a going rate for an item is not in the good of the public. if a farmer thinks he can turn a prophet on dollar eggs, it should be fine.
  • When I compare prices here to those at other Farmers Markets, Iowa City's prices are pretty high.
  • Non-food items are pretty pricey.
  • things are more expensive then you could buy at the store
  • This is the most expensive market I have patronized. Others are Madison, Dubuque and Green Bay. Often fruits and vegetables are more costly than in the supermarket or coop across the street. There is no iddleman at the market, so the high prices don't make a lot of sense to me. I thought getting rid of the middleman and holding prices down was part of the justification for community-sponsored markets. Unfortunately, many people in Iowa City are able to pay whatever is asked. I suspect people with fewer resources are priced out of the arket.
  • One of the more expensive markets we have ever been too and we still go all of the time.
  • Prices have gotten higher and higher in recent years. I know farmers have to make $, but sometimes they take advantage and charge shockingly high prices.
  • Huh???
  • Local growers and producers must be able to ask a price which supports their work.
  • Prices are very fair; a lot of work goes into the products that are sold. What happens is 'straight arm transactions' - I think that vendors already compare prices and see what the 'going price' is for commonly offered items - e.g., sweet corn, beans, apples. If things don't sell, vendors often lower their prices.
  • Prices are great.
  • It's hard to comment on this because some of the prices are high but you have to consider the cost to the grower/producer. I like to support locally grown and manufactured products, so it goes with the territory.
  • Would the vendors be willing to, say, take 10% off in the last hour of the event? Don't want to deny them a decent wage but it would be nice to get a 'good deal' without haggling (which I wouldn't do anyway).
  • Some of the prices are a little cost prohibitive for me.
  • Some were high and some were fine.
  • competitive
  • Are fair and economical.
  • Some are high.
  • Some vendors are much more expensive than others.
  • sometimes to high
  • Be cheaper
  • To costly
  • WOW 2-3 times more than grocery store prices
  • a bit expensive
  • many times cheaper than groc store
  • Seem about right
  • The prices are higher in Iowa City than in surrounding communities.
  • Always hate going back to grocery store prices in the fall.
  • Sometimes it felt like some products were a little pricey.
  • again, the farmers command that. we all know prices are higher than outside of IC.
  • They're beautiful!
  • Prices seem reasonable for the most part.
  • I can almost always buy produce cheaper at Aldi.
  • Isn't everything more expensive these days
  • I have found it too expensive to shop for my family of six. Prices are as high if not higher than Hyvee and the New Pi Co-Op. I have walked away empty handed more often than not.
  • I feel like much of it is overpriced compared to other markets
  • More offers of bulk discounts would be appreciated.
  • We buy local to keep our money local. Prices with our CSA ARE VERY FAIR.
  • cheaper prices
  • Very fair
  • Some of the organic produce is absurdly overpriced.
  • At times I feel like produce is a bit high, but I also understand people need to be able to make a living wage.
  • fantastic prices on city-offered market products- clothing, aprons, etc
  • low prices!!
  • Good prices!
  • high- but what isn't
  • Like

Suggestions for Number of Vendors

  • Would more be horrible? I enjoy wandering between the vendors.
  • I would love to see add'l vendors
  • Why not allow a section for flee marketers to set up a stall? Would draw more people & you can charge them for the space a small fee.
  • Current number of Vendors is about right. Many more and it would be too much. We usually do a double cycle - once to check prices and decide what we're getting, then the second to actually make purchases.
  • I would love to see the farmers market be supported enough to expand and grow into the equivalent of the Floyd Boulevard Local Foods Market in Sioux City, IA.
  • The more the merrier.
  • I don't know what other types of vendors are out there so am not sure if new ones should be brought in.I had heard that Cedar Rapids has a good market but have not been there. It's always nicer to have more/different vendors because it gives the consumer more choices. I would find it helpful if all the vendors selling similar items could be placed in one area. For example, this year there were more jewely sellers. If they were close together, it would be easier to look and compare what they have rather than walking around trying to remember what I liked at one vendor versus another. I realize that there might be space constraints that would prevent this, but it might be worth a try.
  • Could use a few more niche vendors.
  • more produce vendors than crafts please
  • The current space seems to limit the number of vendors. Overall, the market feels small due to the constrained location. An outside venue would provide for a more open feel and would probably accommodate more vendors.
  • the more the merrier!
  • When Cedar Rapids moves it's market to downtown, it becomes an event! Very well attended and a very festive atmosphere.
  • more is better
  • It seems that as the season winds down there are always many more vacancies. Maybe there is nothing to be done about it, but it is a shame to waste the space.
  • the more the merrier.
  • very competitive
  • the more the better!
  • I feel the bigger the better, not seen as competition, more complementary offerings.
  • Would always appreciate more produce vendors if possible. Perhaps wine, artisan cheese vendors.
  • It would be nice if there were more vendors on Wednesdays.
  • More possible food vendors that actually sell food that you can eat right there while shopping
  • more is better
  • Would love to see more!
  • More organic vendors
  • More would always be better.
  • If the market is moved to downtown - number vendor could increase.
  • far too many vendors on Saturday
  • Increasing variety will increase the public attending
  • I believe more vendors would lower prices of available items and the last I heard, there was a waiting list for new vendors.
  • the more the merrier!i do think it is important to encourage local vendors!! maybe allow more temporary vendors so if people want to just do a few they have that option if they are not able to commit fully
  • In a different space, we could have many more vendors.
  • fewer crafts, more food
  • More and wider variety of vendors
  • More and varied vendors
  • could increse number with more room!!
  • could increse number with more room!!
  • The current number of vendors provide a good selection.
  • Need more organic vendors!
  • could use some more ready-to-eat food vendors
  • I thought the number of vendors was good, especially at peak!
  • Non farmer businesses should be located on the south end of the market in the area used for expansion this year. They are not the "heart of the market".
  • More produce vendors if possible. some specialty vendors would be nice - local wine, artisan cheese, etc.
  • would like to see more vendors on Wednesday night
  • The more, the better, but I like what we have, too.
  • More!
  • let some people set up outside the parking garage. washington farmers market always lets 1 local nonprofit do something/sell something at their thurs night farmers market to raise money.
  • I'd like to see more, but........
  • more is better
  • More vendors would be great.
  • Again, I think some of the craft items offered get a bit much sometime, but I generally don't visit that side of the Market, and have no problem with them as long as they don't take up spaces of people who sell food.
  • The more the merrier...I love the variety.
  • More space, so that more vendors can sell with a wider variety of items. Maybe the market could be renamed to a "neighborhood market" and drop the farmer concept.
  • I think more vendors in the community should be allowed a chance to sell products.
  • Maybe the craft vendors could be in a separate area from the food vendors.
  • If it would be possible to get more vendors, that would probably bring in more variety.
  • More vendors
  • If there are vendors who are getting shut out of the market, I'd be in favor of expansion, even if that means more competition. The more different farmers & products I see at market, the happier I am...
  • More vendors would be great IF there was sheltered space and IF they brought new products.
  • I am not a big fan of the crafts. Keep produce/food dominant.
  • I am not a big fan of the crafts. Keep produce/food dominant.
  • more vendors would be welcome
  • If there are too many vendors, it is difficult to walk around and compare products and prices before purchsing.
  • More meat sales
  • The more, the better!
  • There are a good number of vendors, especially on Saturday.
  • I love all the different vendors and more would always be welcome.
  • the more, the better.
  • some weeks there seemed to be less handmade items and mostly produce.
  • There is a good variety of vendors, but the more the merrier!
  • Continue to provide a variety of vendors. I appreciated the locally grown mushrooms, for example.
  • good variety
  • More the better...
  • See previous notes. I envision this becoming huge - I travel to DSM on Saturdays to attend their market. No reason we can't do it here!
  • I don't think there is room for more vendors
  • See above.
  • The more vendors, the bigger the variety of products for sale. More houseplant vendors would be nice.
  • The more vendors, the bigger the variety of products for sale. More houseplant vendors would be nice.
  • Might be nice to have more vendors, esp. produce, on Wednesday nights.
  • The more the merrier.
  • Seem plenty full currently.
  • The more the better.
  • The more, the merrier.
  • more is always good
  • The more variety the better, but it's fine now too
  • As I stated above, if you could expand into the lot behind the Rec Center it would give more room to walk and look and spread out the vendors.
  • I can find all I want, but there might be something I haven't thought of . . .
  • See above comment
  • If you could increase numbers, go for it!
  • More organic vendors. I only buy organic produce.
  • see above about dairy/meat vendors. it would be great if the farmers market is closer to one-stop shopping in the summer.
  • keep adding more
  • A larger, outdoor market would be a tremendous boon to the downtown.
  • But the more the better; I've been glad to see the number on Saturday increased in the past couple of years.
  • See above under product variety.
  • More vendors with a greater variety would be nice, but there is still plenty to choose from now.
  • not that many organic vegetables. Why is that? Could we increase those vendors somehow or encourage them to market themselves (bigger signs?) better?
  • I would like more flower vendors
  • I suggest that if there is limited space, preference be given a) to organic produce, b) to fresh garden and field crops. After all, the name is farmer's market and not cookie bakers market. If somebody raises organic meat, like elks, bisons etc., that should also receive preferred placement
  • more?
  • As stated previously - more produce vendors
  • Too many vendors. See comment under Product Quality.
  • A little congested sometimes. I can maneuver around o.k., but I worry about the older folks and the disabled. Also, some thought might be given to restricting double strollers. Perhaps a reminder to parents to be courteous with their strollers and kids.
  • I believe more vendors would increase interest
  • Like to see more organic
  • I'd definitely be willing to see more.
  • More produce vendors if possible. Do not have more craft/knick-nack vendors.
  • More would be better.
  • Cut down on the crafts vendors
  • Remove the craft vendors - do not like someone selling jewelry next to someone selling lettuce - seems odd for a FARMERS market.
  • Again, it would be nice to have more variety.
  • less ready to eat food and more farmers
  • More vendors would be great!
  • More is not necessarily better; I think it's at the far end of how many now. The
  • Recruit more vendors please!
  • There could be more vendors.
  • Again, it is always nice to have more, but I wouldn't want to turn the market into an arts and crafts show or a funnel cake affair. The emphasis needs to stay on quality fresh food--mostly unprepaired foods (meat, produce, etc.)
  • i tend to puchase from the same handful of vendors. i would wager that is common. i think again, satellite markets(in addition to the main mkt) would better serve the community and farmers.
  • Always the more the better.
  • Could use more new ones!
  • more
  • Parking is a real issue. especially when they roam around and pass out tickets while you are shopping. Maybe a better location for the market would expand the parking and the vendors. Most of the vendors there are wonderful but a little more and with some variety would be wonderful! I understand "newbies" cannot get a space because they are taken from year to year...it is time to expand
  • Just keep a high ratio of fresh produce vendors.
  • Need more
  • always fun to invite new vendors
  • More vendors would be nice, but I don't think the markets needs more baked goods or beaded jewelry.
  • I'm not sure what you mean by "improvement" here. I certainly don't think we need more--I usually just go to the same ones over and over anyhow.
  • More would be great/ but I am not complaining
  • I would like to see a bigger space that allowed more vendors, more entertainers and a different variety of food vendors
  • I don't know if the size of the current market has limited the number of vendors. If so, that seems to me to be a reason to look for a larger space.
  • if you are turning way folks, don't!
  • the more --the merrier but stay in the ramp.
  • We have plenty, but if other vendors want to come in, they should have the chance to do so.
  • Saturday is more full than Wednesday, of course. I like it the way it is.
  • More vendors are always welcome for more options, but that probably thins out profits for everyone.
  • Need More
  • Always room for more.
  • Always move.
  • The more the Better!
  • The more the merrier!
  • MORE!
  • Syc Mall needs more
  • Need to have more choices to attract more people.
  • Just need more we love the F.M
  • More!
  • To bad wednesdays cant have as many vendors as saturday
  • more
  • Wish it was larger - more vendors
  • If more are available, otherwise great!
  • more
  • More Vendors
  • more if possible
  • More is always better.
  • the more the better
  • Great the way it is, but more is always better :) Although keeping a balance of food to non-food is good, too.
  • I think more vendors would be attracted to a larger site.
  • More is always better.
  • More food, fewer crafts
  • I wish Wednesday's was as diverse as Saturday's but can understand that not all venders can make it Wednesday. I go twice a week when possible.
  • a bit thin.
  • More farmers, cooks and artisans! Consider bringing in more vendors who make prepared foods for breakfast.
  • If there was more space I think you could have more vendors.
  • Though, the more, the merrier
  • More vendors will mean more variety, which is always good.
  • more food venders
  • I would love to see more added, maybe expand more under the ramp or into washington st.
  • It would be nice to have more on Wednesdays downtown, as well as at the market at Sycamore.
  • The more vendors, the better.
  • The more the merrier!
  • Sure, as many vendors as the site will hold!
  • the more the better
  • More is always good!
  • i like it that you have opened it up to more vendors
  • more organic produce
  • The more the merrier.
  • As stated above, more vendors on a closed off-Washington Street would make for an improved experience.
  • Some expansion would be nice...though I'm not that eager to see the market expand into crafty non-food baubles and gee-gaws.
  • If there's the interest...expand it as much as possible. The more vendors the more potential business.
  • If there was more space it would be great to have more vendors.
  • more diversity of people
  • I would like to see more vendors at all markets. I like how you have expanded the market to the east and south to completely fill up Chauncey Swan.
  • the more the better, i think.
  • keep adding more
  • As mentioned above, it's a bit crowded- maybe one are could be for food/ag. items and another for crafts
  • Would like as many vendors as are interested in being there.
  • The more the better.
  • Is there room for more?
  • Maybe the weekday aternoon could have more vendors.
  • pretty good
  • more is always good
  • always room for more

Suggestions for Music/Special Events

  • I enjoyed all the events this year.
  • We oome early so we miss these.
  • Have them do a live auction viz the Internet. I would love to help with this just ask for a small fee from each sale.
  • Maybe it would be better if the music was facing the park area, and make it more enjoyable for people that are at the farmers market instead of the cameras of the IC Cable TV.
  • We don't usually participate in the special events.
  • I wasn't there for any of the events since I go to the market when it opens.
  • live music is great at these events!
  • I would love for the market to expand
  • adds such a nice ambience. Love it.
  • WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE A MORE DIVERSE CHOICE OF MUSIC
  • I love the cooking demonstrations.
  • Have enjoyed those this year, would like to see the presence of non-profit organizations setting up information tables, maybe one a week on a rotating basis (free one-time space??)
  • Not of interest to me
  • More!
  • the events at the fringe of the market are a great idea and usually quality entertainment.
  • I like the music very much, please continue offering music during the market.
  • Haven't gone when they are playing but enjoy it on Channel 4 in the winter. Good to have places for groups to play. Did you know the Senior Center New Horizon Band has groups too?
  • Great job with kids activities and market music!
  • I never know who the musican is beforehand. If I knew, it might encourage me to attend more frequently.
  • The children's activities are fantastic and should be continued.
  • More cooking demos
  • The music creates a festive atmosphere and the local musicians are a good compliment to the local products.
  • While the music and special events are nice, they are never the reason I come to the market
  • Didn't see much when I was there.
  • Usually just go Sat AM for what I need
  • My daughter loved Kids Day! The balloon line became really long, so I'd say for next year, have a second balloon artist available if possible. Anything that is going to have the potential to cause people to wait for more than 5 minutes, I'd have a backup plan. I saw that there was somebody entertaining them with a guitar, but that can only do so much. Loved the "clowns", girl walking on stilts. It was great to have all the hula hoops, bubbles, all of it was very nice! As for the music, keep getting those local artists to come sing and play. It adds to the great atmosphere!
  • This on line survey is too late to be of any significance or use. It should be a paper survey, passed out at the market, city hall, new pi and the ICPL.
  • music etc...so fun!!!
  • would like to see more variety in music selection (seems to be mostly folk)
  • It doesn't need to be a musical event but if there is something it would be nice if it was a little better organized. The setting is not the best as you have to walk between the vendors to get to the music. I'd like to see a second layer facing the music area so it becomes part of the market instead of tacked on as an after thought.
  • very nice additions - on Wednesdays, and also on Saturday morning, with the breakfast carts, etc.
  • This is a great aspect of the market. I love the music, the kids activities, and the adoptable animals.
  • The events were often the catalyst for my visit to the market. The more the merrier!
  • really enjoy the music
  • Nice to have live music in the park next door!
  • I especially like the cooking demos.
  • Haven't really attended any, though I'm aware they're there and feel it adds to the "celebration" of the event.
  • Great idea to have music and children's events associated with the market.
  • Kids day is a great event.
  • I have not attended any special events.
  • Coordinating special events with the market will ensure that the customers stay and may buy more from the vendors.
  • Don't have kids, so don't care about this stuff.
  • I presume musicians are paid and we are lucky to have them as much as we do. If money were not an issue I would keep them going after school starts.
  • I presume musicians are paid and we are lucky to have them as much as we do. If money were not an issue I would keep them going after school starts.
  • music is always good.
  • The music is fun! Always enjoyable . . .
  • I would go only for produce, not entertainment
  • While I think the racial/ethnic diversity of the customer based to the market is growing, it is still considerably small. I wonder if there are ways to attract a more diverse customer to the market with different special events.
  • I've enjoyed the kids day for two years now. The music is great and the cooking demostrations are also wonderful.
  • really have enjoyed the music/art/grilling vendors
  • Great idea to have activities for the children and music for everyone. Keep on doing this.
  • It's a nice addition to the market.
  • Music adds to the atmosphere and is a plus.
  • More of this
  • The more the better- longer hours. It seemed that sometimes we would get down there when the music was almost done, and we didn't get to hear much. Also, we LOVE kids day!!
  • The city does a great job of music and activities.
  • This area adds no layer to my enjoyment and patronage of the Famers's market
  • I would like there to be educational tables/vendors/presentations about food, horticulture, gardening, things like that.
  • music is a great thing
  • Great variety throughout the season. I like the informational booths, too!
  • i don't really pay any attention to musicians there (though i play and sing myself): i'm there to buy stuff to eat there/now and stuff to take home for later. music/entertainment doesn't really enter the picture for me: it's all about interacting with vendors and other customers.
  • I think the music or special events could be a larger focus. Right now, they seem to be on the side and not many people pay attention to them. Could you get larger bands? Maybe even have dancing, like they do on Friday nights during the summer? I think it would help draw larger crowds.
  • more variety needed ... getting kind of tired of the bluegrass banjo type music. this town is filled with a variety of artists including international sounds.
  • Live, gentle music is also an added benefit.
  • good
  • More!
  • I go to the market whether or not we have music and special events. However, I do think it is nice to have these.
  • I was not a fan of the aerobics or other "special" events held on occasion in conjunction with the Market. But it is not something that will keep me from attending, one way or the other.
  • not a central feature of the market. Often if there is music, it is not noticeable or audible. If it was more obvious, then people would be more likely to linger and visit and shop more.
  • Perhaps on Wednesday evenings it would be nice to have live music
  • I don't go to the market to be entertained. I am looking for quality food.
  • I like the musical and dance presentations. The farmers market adds a bit of entertainment and festival -the kids like it-it is fun!
  • Would like to see music at more of the dates.
  • This was a nice touch, but might not be necessary.
  • I like the music and special events.
  • Some of the musicians were a little annoying--please don't have Scotty Hayward again! I can only take about 5 minutes of that.
  • I've taken part in some of the entertainment/events. The cooking events are most interesting to me. The music is usually just o.k., but I don't have any great suggestions.
  • Like having music, etc. but have to be careful of noise levels in the garage, too loud and you can't think or communicate with the vendors, makes the market too overwhelming - put them in the new food court area :)
  • never paid any attention to the music that was there. but my wife liked it
  • More music is always a good thing. The market should serve as the catalyst for a festival feeling with artists and musicians in the surrounding area.
  • I love the music. We should have it every time and more of it. The musicians should be local and they should be able to sell their CDs
  • Seems a little too tame at times.....need some more pizazz.....maybe salsa, or something that would make people want to dance?
  • The cooking demonstrations are a nice addition.
  • Never saw any of these when I was there
  • Not sure how much that adds to the venue.
  • Every market should feature music.
  • better variety
  • Excellent. I made the Wednesday market my destination for dinner and music.
  • Wonderful!
  • Music on Saturdays would improve the atmosphere.
  • Events need more promotion. I go every Wednesday and many Saturdays (when I get up in time), but I never know what's going on until I get there that day.
  • Its been a great addition--keep it up!
  • A bigger venue would allow several entertainers to operate at the same time.
  • Need a stage area in park
  • Varied and enjoyable!
  • What we have has been very nice.
  • Sometimes it is nice to have the music there, but really, I don't go FOR the music.
  • I truly enjoy the musicians at the Chauncy Swan market.
  • Is great!
  • We prefer not to have music- its not a show its a farmers market
  • We are usually there at 7:30 so we miss alot of the music.
  • Music and events are great!
  • MORE!
  • Dont attend cant relate.
  • Have music end in October to attract more people.
  • could have music
  • more music please
  • great
  • One of the best city services!
  • Great
  • Awesome IC Animal Shelter
  • Love the cooking demos. I wish there was more variety with the music. I'm tired of the bluegrass type of music.
  • need to have music and special events in may, sept, oct. many people come to the market for the events in the summer months but do not relise the market goes to the end of october
  • I love the music. One thing i have seen at other markets are cooking demonstrations using products available that day.
  • Sometimes seems like the same acts appear every year. Bring in some new bands.
  • We loved the music--would love to see more.
  • I love the chef days. I wish they were every weekend instead of only once a month. It really helps to see what can be created from the produce available.
  • very nice
  • Continue mobile animal adoption visits!
  • I really loved the musical acts there in the park this past year, as did my 5-year-old daughter.
  • Please keep the music out in the park, not in the ramp. Too hard to talk to the vendors on that end when music is blaring. The Jazzercise demo earlier this year was very annoying. Way too loud and unpleasant.
  • These are fun!
  • advertise bands better, the music is a great addition, more food deoms
  • I'm here for the market not entertainment. Just seeing family units and especially children is entertainment enough
  • It can be really loud and distracting for the shelter animals or when trying to talk to vendors/friends... It's just not to everyone's taste and doesn't need to be as loud.
  • I only remember music a couple of times; more would be nice
  • like the kids crafts and the music.
  • I'm saying "some improvement" only because it's nice to see a live local band playing during the market.
  • Enjoyed the music and the variety of things going on (including the animal adoption)!
  • This is nice, anything more would be overkill.
  • great music
  • Love the Market Music....great, informal venue for local talent (WHICH IS CONSIDERABLE!!!) who don't often get to play or be heard in a family friendly, smoke free, booze free venue.
  • do not attend these at this time - am excited to have children old enough to go to the children's activies. I LOVED when there were food vendors there with fresh lemonade, etc.
  • Love the live music!
  • we need to hear some black acts
  • The local music is fabulous!
  • I especially like the shelter dogs!
  • too much banjo twang ... we need more variety to reflect the variety of people in this town.
  • really enjoy the atmosphere
  • I did not attend any of the farmers markets this year that had the music going on during my shopping. I do not attend the market because of the music, I attend to buy good, local foods.
  • wonderful additions to the market!!!
  • More Visibility for the music and special events.
  • Great music this year
  • I'd like more visible announce of whole seasons offerings.
  • good
  • ?

Do you have any other suggestions to improve the market?

  • THIS IS A GREAT SERVICE.
  • Selling local Iowa wines.
  • Yes, I designed some software that would work great. If interested in a demo just call me or email.
  • None other then noted above.
  • I would like it downtown and out of the ramp
  • I strongly encourage you to view the video The Organic Opportunity. the ICPL purchased it at my recommendation, or purchase from http://www.localharvest.org/dvd-or-vhs-the-organic-opportunity-C9394
This film is designed to be used with Chambers of Commerce, economic development organizations, elected officials, farmers and consumers -- anyone interested in discovering the positive impact a local food system grounded in organic agricultural practices can play in a community's economic, environmental and physical health.

  • I like the two indoor markets. I would be nice if it could be expanded to three: two scheduled in Nov and one in December.
  • I really enjoy the market, but would like to see it expand. I don't think growth is possible without a new location.
  • Let's try moving it into Downtown IC a few times. Is it possible to do a Sat. market that possibly blocks off a street ala booths at arts fest?
  • I really like the idea of either utilizing the Ped Mall or a combination of Ped Mall and closing of one block of Dubuque Street for the Saturday morning market.
  • more vendors should accept ebt
  • Move it out of the ramp
  • see above
  • Free parking within 2 blocks, and in the ramps on Saturday mornings when market is in session.
  • A shuttle bus on Saturday mornings would be nice. Maybe plan a few stops in the projected Riverfront Crossings area? I'd love to hop on one, shop, and return home. Now, I am limited to what I can carry for a mile, the weight gets heavier with each step. Thank you for listening. I love the market and the marketplace.
  • I appreciate the market a lot. It is the most valued City service in my opinion. It really helps my quality of life.
  • No, we appreciate having it!
  • Hard to get to and park. Still go anyway but go less than I would if it was easier to park.
  • widen aisle
  • We love the farmers market.
  • Having a few grocery carts would be an improvement. These would be useful to people who have difficulty carrying heavy or awkward items such as large melons or potted plants. Alternatively, have a group of volunteers (e.g. a youth group) who would be able to assist people.
  • Location change
  • your mkt is really good--do not spoil a good thing by trying to enlarge it on Saturday a lot os disabled people can enter thge mkt on Saturday due to the parking
  • We have enjoyed the music and other special events at the market. The music is always of good quality. Having a special event, like activities for children, increases my family's chance of attending on a particular weekend. However, children's events are not as well organized or well-stocked as they could be. Lines can be long and supplies run low on these days. When special activities are advertised, we sometimes come at the specified time to find the tables have been taken down or no one is running the activity or the advertised activity is really just art supplies scattered on a table. This can be disappointing. We enjoy the market, and special activities increase our chance of spending more time there after we're done shopping. Some better organization of special events would benefit the market as a whole. We also enjoy having breakfast, lunch or a small snack at the market. Some booths offer snacks: cupcakes, egg rolls, fruit, etc. that can be easily eaten outside on the lawn near the parking garage. And sometimes there are food vendors in this area: grilled corn on the cob, burritos, etc. Having a few more snack/lunch/food vendors would also increase our chance of spending more time and money at the market after we are done shopping in the parking garage. Hot food vendors are a bit hit or miss though, and I wonder if it would benefit the market to seek out a few more options there.
  • Keep up the good work.
  • I would invite you to go to the Des Moines Farmers Market on Saturday in Downtown Des Moines to get some ideas of ways to improve the Iowa City Farmer's Market.
  • move it to a park
  • Make a booklet of vendors (post online to save money) So we know where they are from, what their products are, what their gardening practices are.
  • It seems that the west side of the ramp area is always much more crowded then the east side. Possibly redistripting vendows would also distribute the customers and also encourage people to visit the whole market.
  • I was glad to see the Sat hours extended to noon. I really hope that you consider extending the Wed eve hours by starting the market earlier.
  • Invite ICCA to set up a booth about local arts and culture events. (Since they represent over 100 corridor organizations, it seems very reasonable to invite ICCA but not all nonprofits.)
  • YEAR AROUND PLEASE!!
  • Sometimes pretty dark- difficult to see.
    Sometime prices aren't very visible
    More product info
  • add another evening per week!
  • see above!!
  • see above!!
  • I do like it located in the parking ramp because of the protection from the weather.
  • Better lighting on cloudy/dark mornings.
  • We were very pleased to come back to the IC Farmers Market. My husband and I did not go for many years b/c of schedules, having to "deal" with parking, etc. I think the market is on a great track, and we look forward to next summer!
  • Better signs about no pets allowed. Better signs at Washington street entrance...some day a confused driver is going to pull in the market and run someone over
  • I appreciate the farmers market very much. The best thing the City does.
  • more publicity re: the first and last markets of the year.
  • It's nice that there is protection from the elements under the ramp but it's a little dark and depressing. I would suggest even closing part of a street on one side so it could spill out into the sunshine a little.
  • Encourage buyers to bring their own bags, and encourage venders to honor that - they seem willing to bag everything, even if you already have bags.
  • May be think about moving the market to an area that is a little less congested a little more user friendly. It can be irritating enough to just not bother with it.
  • Pay organizations like Backyard Abundance and the Master Gardeners to conduct gardening classes in the nearby park. There is a lot of room in the park for low-maintenance perennial plants (like strawberries and blueberries) and showing folks how to plant them would be a big attraction and give them a better connection to their food.
  • I like the idea of a downtown farmer's market where students can also be atttracted to participate.
  • Get Tammy some help!
  • i do not like the location of the market. it's damp, often cold and windy, and the lighting makes everything look odd. i would prefer to visit an open-air market. vendors are creative in finding ways to protect themselves in the rain.
  • Keep it that same as it is.....no reason to fix something that isn't broken in my opinion!
  • Just improving the parking.
  • It would be nice to have a weekly year-round location.
  • basically "it works, don't fix it." It is an enjoyable weekly event!
  • I am interested in purchasing fresh produce, not crafts or baked goods, so I appreciate having as many vendors as possible selling food that they have grown.
  • I think we are very lucky to have the farmers' market.
  • Please do not move it's current location!
  • Great Farmer's Market. Excellent produce, great prices.
  • Food vendors. It's nice to have them there and I'm not suggesting they leave, but sometimes the smell of what they're cooking overwhelms the entire market. No solution to this, just a comment.
  • It's one of my favorite things about Iowa City.

When I have company from out of town during market season, I always try to take them...they love it.
  • Allow small dogs that can be carried.
  • No, the market is fun to go to and it brings a sense of "small community" feel to a larger area.
  • It's absolutely the best thing about Iowa City.
  • I am a big fan of Des Moines farmers market which seems to have more prepared food but I am not sure that is viable in a small town. As for the parking ramp, I like staying dry but miss the sunshine of the old location.
  • I am a big fan of Des Moines farmers market which seems to have more prepared food but I am not sure that is viable in a small town. As for the parking ramp, I like staying dry but miss the sunshine of the old location.
  • Wish the season were longer -- indoors, perhaps?
  • Just the earlier start of sales on Wednesdays. We would shop on Wednesdays if we could leave work, shop and go home. No waiting around for the market to open after a long day at work.
  • limiting the vendors to gardening products would allow more room for attendees especially the handicapped and elderly
  • Based on the popularity of the markets, I think Iowa City could support one more location/day of the week. In particular, a location on the west/southwest side of town, preferably sheltered, would be nice.
  • Have the police and parking personnel on hand at every event to ticket/tow any vendor setting up too early or blocking traffic that is trying to exit the ramp
  • Please leave the market in this wonderful location with shade and with the corner park just outside. The area allows closer concentration of vendors and less walking than if held along the downtown streets or on the Ped Mall. When purchasing items, they become very heavy, and the current location allows easy trips back to a car and return to purchase more!
  • Love the market! Wish that the season could be longer!
  • I heard rumors that it might be moved. Please don't. It gets people downtown, and the vendors are protected from the weather.
  • Thanks for all you do...
  • My one concern is that it is bordering on growing out of the existing space.

However, for the time being, it still works well.
  • I cannot attend often because I become anxious in the press of people. It would help me if the market could be more spread out and the people density less.
  • Think big! More vendors, more variety, Saturday hours - go for it! No reason for people to leave town to find an awesome market.
  • I'd like to publicize the fact that many vendors contribute their leftover produce to Table to Table each week.
  • Keep it in the same place. It is protected and I have heard that the farmers want it in the ramp. We do not want to lose the farmers and have a craft show instead of all the great fresh produce and plants.
  • It would help the congestion around some vendor's stalls if they each had signs up HIGH with a list of their products and the prices. Frequently it's very hard to even see what someone has for sale because of the people clustered around. Chalkboards would be an economical and easy to use way for the vendors to be able to update their products and prices for the current market day.

  • I think the City is doing a good job other than it would be great if it started at 5:00 or 5:15. I would go a lot more if the starting hours were earlier, since I work downtown.
  • keep at Sycamore Mall
  • We go almost every Saturday and always look forward to it. Please do not move it to an uncovered area.
  • The market seems just about right for the vendors, and the pricing is more than fair. Iowa City has a great opportunity to purchase fresh produce and support local merchants.
  • I'd love to the see the farmers market available year-round in a permanent location.
  • It's wonderful and each year it seems to get better
  • I miss them from November to spring. Cannot wait until they start again.
  • maybe later!
  • Love the market!
  • I have lived in Iowa City for 2 years and have only visited the farmer's market once (Oct 2009). Lack of free parking downtown on Saturdays and a late start on Wednesdays has kept me away. I would love to buy more local produce/meat which in turn would support the Iowa City economy, but the current set-up is not convenient at all.
  • I've only been a couple of times (I live in Mount Vernon and go to that farmer's market every week), but I loved how big and busy and full of great products and people the Iowa City market is. I hope I can come more often next summer.
  • Thank you for all the hard work you do to provide us with a farmer's market. Saturday is my grocery shopping day and I always go to the farmer's market first. I really appreciate the opportunity to support local growers and to buy fresh, good food.
  • Keep up the good work.
  • Keep up the good work, it is a valuable asset.
  • maybe some outdoor gas heaters during the cold times could extend our hours/months of operation.
  • i think the market is generally great, but id love to see a larger variety of food vendors, particularly local meats, cheeses and dairy. the bakers are great.
  • Shelter it under tents and move it to Iowa Avenue.
  • let's have it year-round
  • The parking ramp is a bit dreary visually but being out of the rain (and sun in the summer) probably makes the trade-off worth it. On the other hand, Madison, Wisconsin has a splendid, lively market and it's in the open air.
  • It is fine the way it is. It is well attended as it is.
  • lets find a place inside for nov.-april market
  • could be made more attractive.
    Parking could be improved.
  • I love the flea market side of things! I'd like to see, again, many more vendors on a regular basis. On site chair massage. More art. Etc.
  • My biggest suggestion is to stay open a little later.
  • There is no bike parking available in the market. That is not a major problem because there is some at City Hall and the Coop, but it would be more convenient if also at the market.
  • I would love to see an indoor location used to continue the market into the colder months.
  • Some way to advertise who will be at the market in any given week
  • We love the farmers market. we go every Saturday right at 7:30! All summer we don't buy any vegetables from the grocery store. The market is a wonderful assest to the community.
  • Year round if at all possible so that arts and crafts can be purchased as well as jams, etc.
  • See my comments above.
  • I go the market every Saturday with my son. It's our weekly tradition to get a cookie there before going to story time at the library. We both love having the animal shelter there with pets for adoption, and the music also keeps us hanging around. We often run into friends and co-workers, which makes it even more feel like a great community resource. Many thanks to the people who work so hard to pull it off.
  • just more veggies.
  • Only those noted above. Thank you.
  • The Wednesday market seems more crowded than Saturday. Perhaps greater spacing between vendors would help.
  • Don't mess with a good thing. The parking ramp may not be pretty, but the park is, and it makes for a perfect shopping environment.
  • I think it would be wise to keep it in a covered space because of weather concerns. I am not a supporter of putting it "downtown", i.e. Iowa Ave or closer to campus. I think the parking would be worse and the vendors would have a more difficult time setting up, not getting blown away with wind, etc. I personally don't think it would increase attendance. I would probably tend to go with what the vendors think. I don't think moving it downtown would help downtown businesses. When I go to the farmers market (weekly, or twice a week), I don't combine that with other errands.(maybe dropping off a book at the library) Maybe that's what you should ask--do current regular patrons combine their farmer's market trip with other downtown shopping?
  • pets still there--which is fine! but if you're going to prohibit dogs, etc, enforce it; if no enforcement, you can't really prohibit... (successfully)....
  • Thanks for hosting the market. It is my favorite city service.
  • I would love to see the market operate for a longer period during the year.
  • We love our farmers' market.
  • keep it where it is and keep doing what you are doing. we enjoy it each time we go
  • i would like to see awnings installed along the outside of the parking ramp so vendors can back into spaces and sell to customers walking around on the sidewalks outside and in the light. if it were rainy the market coordinator would tell all to set up facing in.
  • I think there should be a couple of benches for the elderly or fragile or people who are just worn out to sit down and take a break from time to time.

I like the recent move to put cooked food in an area of its own, which makes things very picnic-y,
  • Need to get a "green living" piece going....e.g., selling home compost systems, or maybe some "green" educational angle....
  • Just parking parking parking
  • It would be nice to have markets even once a month all year 'round. Can't we continue to use the Rec Center between Dec-May?
  • Our Farmers Market is great! Do not change anything!
  • dairy, really. and vendors out in the air in the park? a few, maybe. an end goal of a very year round market would be great, but i realise this must be accompanied with involvement in other, farm related projects
  • Mainly move it outside on sunny days and expand it.
  • More food cooked on premises, ready to eat.
More coffee choices and breakfast items.
  • Possibly start the Wednesday market in the afternoon.
  • Please open on Wednesday earlier than 5:30. Given the crowds on Wednesday, you might consider 2 mid-week markets instead of just one.
  • anything that continues to improve the atmosphere of good, caring people enjoying life. This is a great investment in Iowa City being a hospitable place.
  • I believe that the downtown would benefit from moving the market to the center of downtown. It would be enjoyable to eat breakfast at one of the restaurants or have coffee there while at the market. It also would allow people like me who don't make an effort to go to the ped mall to window shop. I lived in Des Moines and went to their farmer's market every Saturday and counted it as one of the additions to my quality of life. I would appreciate a similar uplifting venue for the farmer's market here. I see the potential
  • I liked the various extra info booths that were there this year. (Recycling, etc.)
  • Current arrangement is convenient for BOTH shoppers and vendors. Impact of weather is minimal at downtown area with shelter from rain, wind, heat of summer. DON'T FIX WHAT AINT BROKE!!!
  • "It ain't broke, so don't try to fix it."
  • Year-Round--Special emphasis on "Iowa products"-- see
    example Great Fall, Montana http://www.greatfallsmt.net/events/madeinmontana/index.htm
  • Parking is the only issue I can think of. Many a time I have circled the lot like a shark. Within a few minutes I always get a spot, though. It is a bit of a pain, but not a big enough pain to move the market.
  • The lighting in there is terrible. I look at the strawberries and they are a muddy brown under those lights instead of red. Makes me wonder if all of the vegetables and fruits (and people) would be more appetizing if their color was accurate.
  • make it a year-round venture!
  • It would be more convenient for all vendors to accept debit/credit cards.
  • No, it's wonderful!
  • We go to Sycamore Mall Market - Its great, convenience in our area. Do more to promote it to sellers and buyers. Many people dont want to hassel of going downtown! Keep Sycamore Mall and make it better!
  • Many nice people at the market. No parking alond the east side of the Rec Center
  • You should try the first saturday of the month in the street (closed) downtown.
  • Do year around or atleast once a month in the winter.
  • It would be great to have people in farmers market gear to serve as product to car service particularly helpful for siniors and people with disabilities.
  • Do not move to new location, Iowa Ave. Limited parking, great where it is at now for vendor parking, electrical hook ups, ect.
  • Expand it!
  • Add vendors, More kids activities, resolve parking issues with city.
  • Always Excellent!
  • More Parking!
  • I think its fine.
  • Dont let anyone more it form Chauncy Swan, not even for a day.
  • Lower Costs
  • Only one problem being many vendors come very early and are not courteous to parked cars. early being 3:45 - 4:00. They are sometimes blocking cars at 4:15
  • I appreciate the nov/dec craft/farmers market too could be 2x/mo for those months or monthly feb-april
  • Wish there was more room for more. I like the weather protection of the ramps
  • Educational into on value of healthy food, recipes; profiles of farmers
  • Please keep it under cover for rain protection
  • Several friends are vendors and wated to expand their stall space but said not room was avaiable! Thanks I think the market is a huge asset and privilage!
  • There are many who use the sycamore farmers market - so why not add an eastside location?
  • Although the parking ramp is a central location and offers protection on rainy days, it's quite unattractive and kind-of smelly. It would be nice to create a more inviting physical environment.
  • When I go to the Farmer's Market I expect a place of commerce. Too many people linger in conversation blocking access to vendors. They act like it's a cocktail party. I find it claustrophobic. I want to get in and get out. Ban strollers. Create mingling pens for these people out of the way of those wishing to buy things.
  • I think our farmers market is great just how it is.
  • Tami, I lost my vender survay. If you send a new one I well fill it out.
  • Keep up the good work!
  • I feel sorry for vendors that have to deal with other vendors that come 5 minutes before start time and try to get into their parking stall!!! Everybody should be there by 6:30 AM or they don't get in. Or leave their cars elsewhere and carry their product in if they come late.
  • Keep the covered location
  • Free parking on Sat AM would reduce traffic congestion in the rec center lot - after all, bar partons, get free parking every night!
  • Move the market outdoors during summer months. Parking lot ambiance stinks.
  • Increase advertising (reminders with City bills, etc.) Integrate with transit (have some routes make scheduled stops at the market; give vendors some bus passes to give out to customers who make large purchases).
  • Everyone I talk to loves our Iowa City market.
  • I love the farmers market don't change a thing!
  • No strollers!
  • I love coming to the farmer's market! Everything for the most part seems to be working for the event and it is successful.
  • Your market reminds me of the ones I visited in Reno, Missoula and Portland. There were more art booths in Portland but ours definately has the Iowa Feel. I love that you have the musicians and the childrens activities. It is a community building event so these activities and the chefs really do make a difference. True the excellent produce is important but it brings others in the family in with the activities and ready to eat food. Have you considered grower talks? I am sure your producers could teach us about their methods and their philosopies on growing.
  • the orange lights and the literally and figuratively cold atmosphere are absolutely hideous. i stay there with my son just as long as I need to. the market gives me the creeps. I dont like it.
  • One of the highlights of the summer/fall -- do whatever you can to keep it going and continue making it a great place to buy and sell produce and more.
  • This is a great market, and we really appreciate all the people who put it together. However, the seemingly constant impulse to "improve" it really isn't necessary. We don't need to be like Des Moines, for example. The ramp is perfect for the market, and be careful not to let the music and demos become too much of a distraction.
  • It's always crowded by the tomato stand. She needs more room.
  • I believe the Farmer's Market should be an event, not just a way to get fresh food. At the Des Moines Farmer's Market, I bought gourmet coffee, an amazing authentic South American breakfast, and the best jambalaya I've ever had, in addition to farm fresh foods. The fact that it was outside and not under a parking garage really helped the atmosphere. Move the Farmer's Market into downtown and close Iowa or Washington Street between Linn and Clinton.
  • Larger signs on where to park, enter, etc. for those who are unfamiliar with the market. I remember some intimidation when I first wandered in.
  • I love it as it is! :)
  • The addition of the animals from the shelter is wonderful!
  • We love the Farmer's Market and are loyal customers. Keep up the good work!
  • ADVERTISE more broadly.
  • No, I think the market is running well. I especially like the IC Animal Adoption area now.
  • No, I think they do a great job!
  • As I said above, I'd love to see the market stay open throughout the year. They were doing this in Fairfield, with an indoor location and lots of baked goods and other things in the winter.
  • Just the prices. If we are buying direct from the source it should logically be less expensive than from a store.
  • I really enjoy the market and look forward to its continued expansion - thanks for all the work you do to make it a better experience for everyone.
  • I'm wondering if it would be possible allow 1-2 booths to be hosted by not for profits such as UAY, FasTrac, MYEP or something on that order. Allows the kids to acquire some business knowledge and some $ as they sell their products.
  • I think it's great and LOVE going!
  • I would love to see a year round farmers market
set up in a vacate building.
  • I would love to see a year round farmers market
set up in a vacate building.
  • I don't go anymore because it's just too cramped and crowded. Needs to be somewhere with much more space.
  • Would you consider moving the farmers market to the City of IC parking lot or somewhere else downtown other than the parking ramp?
  • Add more vendor space!
  • I would like to be able to walk my dog to the market (a two-for-one - both of us getting exercise AND shopping locally). Maybe you could either allow them or have dog sitters available?
  • Although I am fine with the current hours I do wish the season went longer, or there was a bi-weekly or a monthly market in the off-season (not just the one holiday market).
  • I have been very happy with the present farmers market for many years. Have shopped at the market for over 10 years. I also attended & purchased items at this years holiday market, held on the 12/12, inside Robert E Lee. Nice place to pick up local made holiday gifts.
  • If possible have it run longer. Maybe there would not be as many vendors, but I think there would still be a market for homemade goods. Maybe move it inside for the winter. I know a lot of people who would attend a winter market for homemade bread, crafts for gifts etc.
  • I really like the addition of the special holiday makets to extend the season.
  • Maybe a port-o-potty? Co-op or Rec center are the closest restrooms and sometimes with young kids even 1.5 blocks is too much :) Maybe down the alley towards Gilbert? Or on an upper lvel so there's no adverse smell issue for shoppers.
  • A rotation in the days that market is open.
  • Great Farmers Market! Love Amish Donuts
  • No- love the market! Thank you! :)
  • Fewer crafts, more food.
  • Ped mall.
  • Better lighting. Thank you.
  • Venors are charged too much to participate.
  • Prices are rather high
  • No
