Student Citizenship
In the fall of 1994 an award was created to recognize the positive citizenship of our community young people. The teachers at each elementary school in Iowa City nominate and cite examples of sixth grade students that demonstrate good citizenship; obeying rules and being helpful and considerate of others; taking responsibility for their actions; demonstrating helpfulness and positive interaction with others; and displaying of diligence and improvement that benefits the student, their school and the community.
Each month during the school year an elementary school is asked to provide their nominations to the City Council. The school and nominees are included on the Council agenda, and a special recognition plaque presented to each student by the Mayor. Council meetings are televised on City Channel 4. Parents, students, and other school representatives are asked to attend the meeting.
This is a great opportunity for the School District and the City Council to recognize young people for their outstanding qualities.
Elementary schools participating are:
Hoover, Horn, Kirkwood, Lemme, Longfellow, Lucas, Mann, Regina, Roosevelt, Shimek,
Twain, Van Allen, Weber Wickham, and Wood
