Ross has had the honor of being the city's first African-American Mayor (January 2, 2006- January 2, 2008). Ross is in his third four-year term on the City Council as the District A representative. Prior to being elected to city council, Ross served on the Iowa City Parks & Recreation Commission.
Ross is employed as the Equity Director of the Iowa City School District. He is an adjunct instructor at the University of Iowa’s School of Social Work and is a former director of the school's Quad Cities Graduate Center. Ross is a former youth worker at United Action for Youth and is one of the founders of the Iowa Community Youth Development Training Institute. In addition, he was a trainer for the National Network for Youth and a grant reviewer for the Department of Health and Human Service’s Administration on Children, Youth, and Families.
Ross has a Master’s degree in Social Work from The University of Iowa. He served in the Iowa Army National Guard for six years and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant E-6. Ross was recognized as the Distinguished Honor Graduate at the Iowa Army National Guard’s Basic Non-Commissioned Officer School.
His hobbies include genealogy, softball, and playing the clarinet. He is a member of the Iowa City Community Band and the Quad Cities Wind Ensemble. He lives in Iowa City with his two children.
