ECO Iowa City

ECO Iowa City is a grant-funded initiative to improve environmental sustainability in Johnson County, Kalona and Riverside. ECO Iowa City will provide a series of events, programs, hands-on workshops, films, book recommendations and discussions, incentives and free resources…and lots of opportunities (in person and online!) for fun and community-building.

The program is organized and funded by the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center and the East Central Iowa Council of Governments (ECICOG). Funding also comes from the Solid Waste Alternative Program fund through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Partners include the public libraries of Johnson County, Paul's Discount, ACT, the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy and Environmental Education and dozens of local environmental groups.

UPDATED 4-22-14:  Compost Bins and Rain Barrels

ECO Iowa City partners with local communities and retailers to hold rain barrel and compost bin sales

If a rain barrel and/or compost bin is on your list of yard and garden items to buy this year, you may want to take advantage of an upcoming opportunity! The City of Iowa City, City of Coralville, City of North Liberty, Johnson County and ECO Iowa City will partner with area retailers on a special rain barrel and compost bin sale to help promote local sustainability efforts. Prices of the compost bins and rain barrels will range from $40 to $220, depending on the brands and styles each retailer carries, although a limited number of coupons will be available in advance to help defray the costs.

The partners will work with participating merchants to keep sales local and to extend the amount of time the products will be available. The event will be held April 28 through May 10 during regular store hours for the following merchants that have agreed to participate:

Earl May Nursery and Garden Center, 1901 Lower Muscatine Road
Iowa City Landscaping & Garden Center, 520 Highway 1 W
Lenoch & Cilek ACE Hardware, 1558 Mall Drive
Lenoch & Cilek ACE Hardware, 600 N. Dodge Street

ReStore, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE

Forever Green, Inc., 125 W. Forevergreen Rd.
Lenoch & Cilek ACE Hardware, 1701 2nd Street
Theisen's Home Farm Auto, 100 Westcor Drive

North Liberty True Value, 55 S. Dubuque Street

A limited number of $20 coupons are available to help reduce the cost to consumers, using the City of Coralville’s stormwater funds and the City of Iowa City’s ECO Iowa City funds. All households in Johnson County and the cities of Kalona and Riverside – areas that are served by the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center – will be eligible to receive one rain barrel coupon and one compost bin coupon, which must be used at a participating retailer during the April 28 through May 10 sales period. Coupons will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis in the following locations:

Coupons will be available beginning Tuesday, April 22 until the end of the sale (May 10) or until the coupons are gone. Residents from Johnson County, as well as from Kalona and Riverside, may pick up coupons at:
