Rental Housing Inspection
Complaint Tracking Maps Available
The City, in an effort to promote responsible property ownership, has unveiled the new Complaint Heat Map utility. This transparency tool allows the public to see what complaints the City has received, and in turn, what steps have been taken.
About the Division
The City of Iowa City began the rental housing inspection division in the mid 1970's. The division has five full-time inspectors, inspecting more than 8,800 rental units annually. We work with owners, property managers and tenants to ensure conformance with the Iowa City Housing Code, which establishes minimum health and safety standards necessary to protect and promote the welfare of tenants and the general public as well. We achieve this purpose by inspecting all rental property on a systematic basis. Multi-family structures, those buildings with three or more units, are inspected on a two-year cycle. Single family and duplex structures are inspected every two years. Fraternities and sororities are inspected annually. Complaint inspection may be made upon request.
